Most of my experiences with police have been in the context of protests, and the first time you see a nonviolent protest get clubbed and and mashed into the ground it is a transforming experience (that was in my case in the relatively benign country of Holland)

But the fact that you don't get harassed should not obscure the fact that harrassment and murder happens on a daily basis. The infiltration of Peace Fresno? The ongoing harrassment of homeless people in Santa Cruz? The continuous oppression of the Watsonville police force?

Just because you don't know, doesn't mean it is not happening.
