Santa Cruz, CA- Yesterday, at about 9:20 am, agents of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), pulled the plug on Free Radio Santa Cruz, an unlicensed, low-power fm radio station which began broadcasting in the spring of 1995 to return community control and accountability to our local media. The FCC action came about an hour after more than a dozen agents from the US Marshals Office, some carrying assault rifles,"secured" the property of the Zami student housing co-op on Laurel Street, where the station had been broadcasting for about 5 months. US Marshals stormed the building, and forced the residents outside, some in their pajamas.

Within minutes of the shutdown, a crowd of station DJs, listeners, supporters, & local politicians, gathered in front of the house to protest. Food not Bombs, and a local chef brought hot soup and pastries for the demonstrators. Passing motorists, city bus drivers, garbage trucks, and delivery drivers all honked in suppport of the station. By noon the crowd had swelled to nearly 150 people.

While one team of FCC agents removed the antenna, a second worked at disassembling the studio, while the Marshals mostly stood around. Some two hours later, FCC agents reemerged from the house with an estimated $5,000 worth of radio equipment packed up in moving boxes. The confiscated gear includes, a transmitter, power amplifier, compander/limiter, power supply, antenna, antenna mast, 200 foot coaxial cable, 1 sixteen channel mixer, 1 two channel mixer, 2 turntables, 3 tape decks, 3 CD players, CD Burner, dvd player, vcr, computer, flat-screen monitor, analog telephone hybrid, 2 microphones, and assorted cables.

In our nearly ten year broadcast history, FRSC broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, in defiance of federal regulations. The FCC is charged with regulating the airwaves in the public interest. We believe that it has failed to do so and has proved itself to be controlled by monied interests.

At present, the Free Radio Santa Cruz collective is reviewing all options to move forward with our news, music, and artistic programming. We are actively asking for help from our community of friends and supporters. We are only able to remain on the air because of the commitment by our collective members and the help of our community. If you are a listener of Free Radio Santa Cruz, please help us maintain the public airwaves by making a donation. At this time money is needed to secure the neccesary equipment so we may continue to meet the diverse needs of our community.

To support the station financially, send checks payable to Free Radio Santa Cruz, or simply "FRSC," to PO Box 7507 Santa Cruz, CA 95061 or visit www.freakradio.org to donate through a safe and secure credit card transaction.

Re: Free Radio Santa Cruz Silenced By Federal Government

Brothers and Sisters,
I am in shock over the intrusion of the Federal government in our peaceful community, again just as they did to WAMM, trying to suppress the will of the people with armed men and confiscation of property.
Just as WAMM has emerged stronger and gained support from the world community I believe Free Radio will return to the airwaves and internet in a very short time and will gain much more listener
attention and financial assistance as a result of the actions taken by the FCC against FRSC-FM.
Thank you for all you have done and the risks you have taken to advance freedom of speech.

Re: Free Radio Santa Cruz Silenced By Federal Government

Many kudos to the folks of FRSC for getting back up and webcasting immediately after the egregious FCC raid. I can't even imagine the technical problems you're encountering; the dialup stream went down for a few hours but, as near as I can tell, people worked through the night to get it going again.

Your dedication is amazing. The people of Santa Cruz appreciate your hard work in getting us the real information on everything from the busts of local dealers in the park to the war in Iraq and global warming.

There are plenty of people in the community who would love to help in any way we can. Do not hesitate to call on us for anything you need.

Hasta la victoria siempre.

Re: Free Radio Santa Cruz Silenced By Federal Government

I don't get why they raided FRSC in the first place. I've worked at a LPFM station before, and I know that you don't need a license or anything to broadcast anymore (as far as I know, since 1995/1996)...

Kudos to you guys for keeping things running!

Damn stupid FCC!

Re: Free Radio Santa Cruz Silenced By Federal Government

you don't NEED a license to broadcast, but you are required by law to have one...

Re: Free Radio Santa Cruz Silenced By Federal Government

We support FRSC here in Oroville, CA! Vinny provided an awesome interview for us. We're with you in spirit, guys. Us LP's need to STICK TOGETHER!

Re: Free Radio Santa Cruz Silenced By Federal Government

I think it is a little foolish to be upset at the FCC. They have not shut down this pathetic radio station for 10 years, and you should be thank full. I am licensed as an amateur radio operator, and I can tell you that an unlicensed FM band radio station (at even moderately low power) can cause extreme interference to surrounding electronics and other radio stations. Without proper equipment and trained technicians you are just asking for trouble. I totally support the FCC, and am glad that they are finally doing their job and shutting FRSC down.

Re: Free Radio Santa Cruz Silenced By Federal Government

This is truly unfortunate. It may be possible to
get back on the air legally by doing this:
-set up a private streaming audio feed on the internet.
-decode the audio feed at several distributed sites.
-broadcast the internet feed using legal power
limits from those sites.
It IS important to use good quality transmitter
hardware, interference with other services
is not in your interest.

Hi Good People--
Wish I'd been down on the street with you (I was teaching a yoga class). Will give $ when it comes. You're all fine; I miss you! I hear many conflicting ideas about legal vs. illegal... Looking forward to having you back; your contribution is huge.

I cant believe this!! What is the status of Freak radio now? I see it has changed from 93.4 to 101.1. Let me know how things are!! Phil Free?? Are you still around??

What is the status of Freak radio now?

FRSC got back on the internet in 24 hours and was broadcasting at 101.1fm within weeks of the raid.

Thanks for all the support.

FRSC is currently broadcasting on 101.1fm at 100 watts of power. You can also listen online at www.freakradio.org/listen.html

Sometimes other radio stations rebroadcast the FRSC webstream, so maybe you will hear FRSC on a pirate station near you.

You can reach Phil Free and all the FRSC djs by sending an email to:
frsc (at) freakradio.org or by calling our voice mail which you can find the # for at our website.
