Camp Paradise to Return

Larry Templeton intends to rebuild Camp Paradise this Thursday or Friday. Reinforcements from Oregon's "Dignity Village" are pouring into town, to increase Larry's numbers and help him make his stand. Meanwhile, SCPD officer Eric Seilly is slashing tents along the San Lorenzo again.

Boycott Sushi Now! Petitioners Arrested

On January 30th, at 2:45 p.m., two SCPD officers approached the HUFF table and declared that the table was obstructing the sidewalk. Without giving HUFF activists Robert Norse or Zoe Joy Einbinder a chance to move the table, Baker announced he'd been videotaping them all afternoon and had observed that "several people had to walk around them [HUFF]" Norse offered to move the table, saying that it was the first he'd been told of the alleged obstuction...Baker decided to handcuff and take Norse into custody for the infraction citiation after Norse publicly announced he was being ticketed for "operating a political table" and "petitioning". Baker also confiscated the tape recording Norse was making of the arrest process.

Early Morning Fire Destroys Biotech Labs at UCSC

A possible arson fire on the morning of January 11th destroyed the labs of two biotech researchers at the UC Santa Cruz campus. At the scene this morning, some speculated that this may have been an act of sabotage, citing the controversial nature of much of the research performed there. Others were of the opinion that it was simply an accident.

Highway 17 Banner Hangers File Federal Suit

Suit alleges police, Caltrans violated free speech rights by removing banners. A pair of Santa Cruz women who hung anti-war banners over Highway 17 in November and December have filed suit in federal court alleging their First Amendment rights were violated when the banners were removed.

29 Homeless Deaths - 29 Too Many

Santa Cruz participates in the National Day of Remembrance and the reading of the names of the homeless people who have died in the past year....Mayor Christopher Krohn and his mother attended the ceremony and read a prepared statement. They left quickly, even before the reading of the names. No other member of the Santa Cruz City Council attended.
