Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

Too bad that the mother of the "guy" in the white dress didn't exercise her feminine rights and have her abortion.

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

Take your transphobic, bigoted bullshit comments elsewhere. We don't want your hatred here.

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

Ogden, that was the most funny thing i have read today. Thank you.

Of course if you had suggested Barbara Bush should have had an abortion, Melissa would have applauded your comment.

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

Amazing. you've read two sentences of my life and assume you can predict my behavior. fyi: i let women make their own choices about their bodies- abortion or no abortion.

Let's not make this about abortion choices- yours and Ogden's comments are rooted in hatred and fear of those who are different from you- a sentiment inconsistent with those of a protest for peace, justice, and equality.

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

Ogden is just excersizing his/her freedom of speech, thats the problem with everybody, right, left, middle they all claim freedom of speech unless they disagree with it then they try to squash it regardless of which side they were coming from.

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

Ogden was also exercising his right to be an asshole.

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

Hate speech isn't protected as free speech.

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

you are a bigoted homophope, plain and simple.
you're probably also an ant-woman jerk.
you can reserve your right to say whatever crap you feel but i reserve my right- my duty,even- to call you on it.
just realize your hate talk is ineffective and counterproductive- cause the moment you try to make a motion to "correct" anyone- we will have to step in to stop you.
youre rights go only as far as any other's begin. you have no monopoly on access to freedom's. the more you think of yourself, they less you amount to- for real

Counter-Inaugeration demo a big Success!

I was too late to be sworn in as president, but I caught the demo when it had already made its way to the Town Clock. The energy was marvelous. The signs were cutting, humorous, and to the point. Thanks to the organizers and especially to Sherry Conable.

And the excitement of having George McGovern speak to the crowd was such a treat, timely, and gave many of us the nerve to face the next four years.

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

On the picture that is featured, the sign that reads,"MORON WITH A WAR ON", there is a sticker at the bottom of the sign that I would like to find. I was standing next to this woman during most of the event, but I didn't even think to ask where she got it. Would anyone happen to know???

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

this is to "Melissa": all of your comments seem to be pretty vague. i mean.... you are for Peace.... the state of continuous treadery that is passified by your own agenda for more liberal political systems. if you ask me, you have made yourself the new laughing stock of indymedia santa cruz. what an eazy, predictable target you build yourself up to be...

Capturing the Spirit: Community

Thank you to all those who organized the event and participated. All you all form our community spirit. I wouldn't have wanted to spend the sad evening anywhere else.

great photos!!!

The close-ups and the liberty girl provide a very good sense of the sentiment and will of the people.

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

Odgen, that really was a jerk comment to start off an article reflecting peace and liberty. You = jerk. You can exercise your "right to be an asshole," but don't act bewildered when the people you've offended come knocking on your door.

Too bad that the mother of the "guy" with the transphobic remarks didn't exercise her feminine rights and have her abortion.

Oooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (haha)

For good measure: Fuck yea interesting photography! Fuck yea "Moron with a War On" sign (what the heck IS that material?) Fuck yea those little flowers that look cool with her hair color and sweater! Fuck no for our tax dollars at work *shakes fist* Fuck yea for freedom of speech! Fuck yea for trannies who protest Bush!

(PS - Please do not abort our future trannies. Aborting a tranny is giving a vote to Bush. Don't do it. I'll stick things up your butt.)

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

I have to say that what you are doing in the US is amazing. Protesting Bush at this level will definately drive things in. The fact that the exit polls have you voting for Kerry every state except two is wonderful. Many outside the US feel Americans are being propagandad to ignorance but I know you guys can get this administration thrown out. Maybe one day Nader or the Green Party or somebody will really step in. Take advantage of what civil liberties you have left and keep up the good fight.

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

Just a reminder for those of you who enjoy these photos, there's another half-dozen on Page 2.

Thanks to all who came out!

PEACE.

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

I love "Moron With a War On." She is the REAL DEAL.

One of the great things about these gatherings is the common sentiment expressed through all generations. I especially appreciate the seniors (and wee ones) who came out there. I am inspired by their example, now and by what they did in the past. I am reminded of the song recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary,

"Have You Been To Jail for Justice?"

(Steve Argue has an uncommonly short answer to this question. Right on!)

© 1998 Anne Feeney (BMI)

Was it Cesar Chavez? Maybe it was Dorothy Day
Some will say Dr. King or Gandhi set them on their way
No matter who your mentors are it's pretty plain to see
That, if you've been to jail for justice, you're in good company

Have you been to jail for justice? I want to shake your hand
Cause sitting in and lyin' down are ways to take a stand
Have you sung a song for freedom? or marched that picket line?
Have you been to jail for justice? Then you're a friend of mine

You law abiding citizens, come listen to this song
'Cause laws were made by people, and people can be wrong
Once unions were against the law, but slavery was fine
Women were denied the vote and children worked the mine
The more you study history the less you can deny it
A rotten law stays on the books til folks with guts defy it

The law's supposed to serve us, and so are the police
And when the system fails, it's up to us to speak our peace
We must be ever vigilant for justice to prevail
So get courage from your convictions
Let them haul you off to jail!

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

yeh ogden's an asshole but he does have the right to free speech, even of all places on the sc indymedia site-imagine that! sc liberals so hypocritical anyway that's why i went to sf to burn some goddamn flags. we will never get what we want unless we riot-enough with the folk songs already-what good has it done?

Re: SCruz Counter-Inauguration pix, part 1

>enough with the folk songs
>already-what good has it done?

Folk songs have done a lot.
They've inspired, educated, organized...
They've maintained histories, and they've made some, too.

Political folk music has been an important element in movements for social/racial justice, peace, labor organizing and strikes, and stopping wars.

From Woody Guthrie and Phil Ochs to Ani DiFranco and David Rovics, folk musicians have always been far more radical than the uncreative goons who can think of nothing better than rioting in the streets.

========
and big government should not stand
between a man and his money
i mean "what's good for business
is good for the country"

our children still take that lie like communion
the same old line
the confederacy used on the union

conjugate liberty
into libertarian
and medicate it
associate it
with deregulation
privitization
we won't even know we're slaves
on a corporate plantation
somebody say halleluja!
somebody say damnation!
cuz the profit system follows
the path of least resistance
and the path of least resistance
is what makes the river crooked
makes it serpentine
capitalism is the devil's wet dream

excerpt from "Serpentine," by Ani DiFranco
