UCSC Students and Workers ask the new Chancellor: Where Is The Love?

UCSC Students and Workers Got Some Action This Valentine's Day!

On Monday, February 14th, the Student & Worker Coalition for Justice, AFSCME Service Workers, CUE Clericals, and other campus unions "welcomed" incoming Chancellor Denise Denton on her first day at UCSC.

Several hundred students and workers marched from McHenry Library to Kerr Hall. At Kerr, the Budget Office was noisily occupied, with the large crowd flowing out onto the upper patio.

Students and workers alike are tired of hearing that tuition must go up and that paying a living wage to all workers is impossible because of California's budget crisis while top administrators and figureheads continue to be handed astronomical checks. The UC recently gave out $2.4 million in bonuses to UC health center executives to augment their six-figure salaries. The perqs for incoming Chancellor Denton include a house on the UCSC hill, $60,000 in moving expenses to relocate from Seattle, and even a brand new job for her partner to the tune of $192,000 per year.

Meanwhile, campus workers haven't seen a raise to account for cost of living increaases in 2 years and student fees are scheduled to inflate 8-10% Spring quarter. Entire departments (such as Journalism) have disappeared and others (Hindi and Arabic) are departments on the chopping block. Increased class sizes have eroded students' educational experience as impossible loads are placed on professors and teaching assistants.

Students believe that the workers who feed them, who clean their bathrooms and classrooms, who advise them on their education, who do the work that makes the university run, deserve as much respect as top executives and administrators. "UCSC, and the University of California as a whole, should meet the basic needs of students and workers, not skirt its responsibilityas an institution of higher learning," says Devon Sampson, a UCSC student.

Campus workers and students pay daily for luxuries taken by top UC administrators. "As a clerical worker here on campus, I have waited with baited breath for the University to negotiate a new contract since our's expired last September..." says Michelle Tapiz.
