THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS at Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In Friday 1 Apr 7pm

s you figured out by now, we are in our every other week winter series schedule, alternating with a radical GDI feature at the High Street Barn. The week after this film we will show the final Guerilla Drive-In film of our winter series, Tuvalu.

Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In Radical Film Series Presents
The Battle of Algiers

Director Gillo Pontecorvo's 1966 movie The Battle of Algiers concerns the violent struggle in the late 1950s for Algerian independence from France. The Battle of Algiers is considered the quintessential film study of an insurgency against capitalist suppression. This fact led to the film being banned in France upon its release for fear of creating civil disturbances. More recently a screening of the film took place for Special Operations at the Pentagon on August 27, 2003 to prepare them for what they might expect during the war in Iraq. This film is also highly relevant in light of the inspiring recent uprisings still taking place in Algeria now.
