Police and WHS administrators worked together to silence community voices.
More than a dozen tax-funded police with motorcycles and squad cars carried bags full of riot-gear as they watched over the small protest, organized by the Watsonville Brown Berets.

Repression was common as Watsonville High administrators told protestors to quiet down, threatening two students with arrest - one for telling her peers not to join the military, and the other because he was playing a small drum.

Police consistently told protestors they were not allowed in the building or even on the steps. When a student driving by honked her horn in support of the protests, a throng of police immediately pulled her over and cited her. She later cried as she recounted her story.

On both days, carpools from UCSC Students Against War in addition to two staff memebers of the Resource Center for Nonviolence arrived in solidarity.

correction: there were actually at least 5 onlookers when the student got pulled over for honking her horn - 4 from SAW and at least one from the Berets.

Re: Photos from 4/20 Watsonville Counter-Recruitment Action

If you look in the background of the picture of the students with Navy bags you can see two police squad cars directly behind them and two police motorcycles further back. There's also one administrative mini-car.

Crazy that the city wasted so much money on a handful of counter-recruitment protestors.

Excellent and accurate coverage of an important events. Thanks for the good work.

Flushing Your Tax $$ Down The Toilet

Thanks for the good coverage, Josh. Thanks also to Watsonville Brown Berets and SAW.

I think people from Watsonville should be pissed off. For the most part these police officers stood around and did NOTHING but chat during this job fair. There were far too many of them because the group of protesters was relatively small. I really don't understand why they continued to have such a large police presence. I guess it beats directing traffic.

There is something good I can say about one cop. The oppressive principal from Watsonville High actually told some girls from the high school that they would be arrested if they tried to pass out antirecruitment literature on public property! The girls questioned one officer about it and he said not to worry about it.

The left side bar of the sc indymedia protrudes out onto the screen.

Could you reduce the width of the space? (It currently covers up a good portion of the left side of content.)

Thank you.

Re: Photos from 4/20 Watsonville Counter-Recruitment Action

Well if the USCS events that happened one week prior to Watsonville High's thing then we wouldn't need all the police at WHS. At least Watsonville PD is prepared for what ever might have happened. Why don't you Santa Cruz people stay out of Watsonville, because the people of Watsonville love their police department!

"Why don't you Santa Cruz people stay out of Watsonville, because the people of Watsonville love their police department!"

Which 'people' of Watsonville are you talking about? Every one that we talked to - including a man that stuck his head out of his window to watch the girl get cited for honking her horn once - didn't have anything good to say about Watsonville's police.

Part of the problem is that Santa Cruz people HAVE been staying out of Watsonville. We need to start acting in solidarity with our neighbors.

More than a dozen police remained on both days when it was very obvious that no large-scale action was going to take place. Waste of money and unneeded intimidation.

Re: Photos from 4/20 Watsonville Counter-Recruitment Action

Why don't you take a survey then? Be fair and go to every house in Watsonville and see if they love their police or not. I bet they do!
