Health Dialogs Forum, "Dying With Dignity" (5/11)

Santa Cruz, CA (May 4, 2005) – On Wednesday, May 11, KUSP Central Coast Public Radio, in partnership with Community Television of Santa Cruz County, will host a “Health Dialogs? forum on end of life issues called “Dying with Dignity?. This event, featuring four panelists from Santa Cruz County, will be broadcast live from 6-7:30 p.m. on Comcast Cable Channel 27 and Charter Cable Channel 73. The live program will be also be simulcast on KUSP 88.9 FM

The Terry Schiavo case brought into focus just how confused Americans are about how to deal with dying, be it in a medical, legal or cultural context. The forum will examine the innovations brought by the hospice movement, and the new field of palliative care which seeks to help people facing a long decline. It will also address how to express your wishes in advance about your fate. How do we involve our family? How do we talk about a topic that most people would prefer not to think about?

During the live show, listeners and viewers can call in to the program with questions at (831) 425-8844. Those would like to be part of the studio audience are invited to come to the Community TV studio, 816 Pacific Ave., by 5:40 p.m.

The discussion will be moderated by Rachel Anne Goodman, host of KUSP’s Talk of the Bay. Health Dialogues panelists include: Salima Cobb, professional liason for Hospice Caring Project of Santa Cruz County; Dr. Sharon Tapper, Medical Director of Palliative Care Program at Dominican Hospital and Medical Director of Hospice Caring Project;

Charmiel Teresi, Grief Support Coordinator at Hospice Caring Project; and Nancy Gonzalez-Caro, who will share her experiences during the last few months of her husband’s life and the year since he died.

KUSP is a local station partner for Health Dialogues, a special monthly report airing as part of KQED’s statewide news program The California Report and hosted by Scott Shafer. The show engages listeners in an ongoing discussion of California health-care issues that are crucial to the state’s underserved residents.

The California Endowment, through KQED Public Radio, has provided funding to partner public radio stations around the state to produce their own complementary programming. This funding has made the Health Dialogues Forum “Dying with Dignity? possible.

KUSP can also be heard on the following radio frequencies: 89.1 FM Hollister; 89.3 FM downtown Santa Cruz; 90.3 FM Los Gatos; 91.3 FM Palo Colorado Canyon; 91.7 FM Paso Robles; and 105.9 FM Big Sur.
