News :: Media Criticism

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion, recorded from a shortwave radio. With times and freqs for listening at home. 2 files- broadcast and slow-modem streaming. Free to rebroadcast. Netherlands, Russia, China, and Cuba.
Dear Radio Friend,
            The latest Shortwave Report (May 13) is up at the website
< >in both broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (29:00)

This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, the Voice Of Russia, China Radio International, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From NETHERLANDS- Arab and S American nations met for a summit in Brazil- while strengthening trade ties was a primary purpose for the gathering, global and regional politics were also key issues. As violence in Iraq continues to escalate, US and Iraqi officials claim the so-called "insurgents" are crumbling- are the rebels really losing ground against the occupation forces?
From RUSSIA- The US Congress has increased funding for the war on Iraq, including more money for military bases and bigger prisons- this commentary suggests that the resistance in Iraq is growing and that an "exit strategy" is fading. Kofi Annan is continuing to push for a larger UN Security Council and a bigger role for nations that did not exist when the UN was formed.
From CHINA- China is trying to move the 6 party talks with N Korea forward, but opposes trade sanctions as a method of forcing changes. Then N Korea announced it had unloaded nuclear fuel rods from a pilot nuclear power plant. Police and US troops in Afghanistan opened fire on student demonstrators, killing at least 2 and injuring more than 50. Noted American statesman Henry Kissinger has been visiting in China to discuss the US perspective on China/Taiwan relations.
From CUBA- The Chilean Supreme Court has suspended a previously imposed deadline for human rights investigations, which will allow further scrutiny of former President Pinochet and others in the case of Operation Condor. Then a Viewpoint about the celebrations around the 60th anniversary of the victory over fascism in Europe- with comments about what GW Bush said, and didn't say, in his speech at the commemoration.

      All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm (PST) on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via
There are several other streams that work better-  Freak Radio Santa Cruz now streams this program on Friday at 9:00am (PST)
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)-
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative-
I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt! (maybe a little)
