STOP Wal-Mart from Coming to Your Community!

So far, Santa Cruz County has managed to keep out ultra-evil Wal-Mart from its communities. Wal-Mart is now trying to come into Santa Cruz County... by locating themselves just outside of county lines in the small, unicorporated area of Pajaro. Please help fight the corporate monster!
Sometimes a moment comes when what we do, individually and together, MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE in what happens, for better or for worse, in our communities here on the Central Coast. If we respond, we win. If we fail to respond, we lose. A moment like that has arrived NOW.

At 9:30 AM on Monday morning June 20 the Monterey County Board of Supervisors will hear public comment on whether the county should regulate the development of big box superstores-- combining huge discount grocery sales with cheap consumer goods-- like the WalMart superstore proposed for the unincorporated rural area of Pajaro.

NOT ONLY THAT: at the same time, in the same hearing, the Board will take testimony on whether to show preference for good jobs, whether to discourage bad jobs (with low ages, no benefits and systematic violation of workers rights) and whether to adopt a policy promoting a LIVING WAGE for all working people in the Monterey County. THESE ARE URGENT ISSUE IN A LOCAL ECONOMY ADDICTED TO LOW-WAGE LABOR WITH NO HEALTH CARE AND NO RIGHTS AT WORK.

We all know what WalMart represents. We all know that a WalMart superstore would cause an explosion of traffic, steal needed sales tax from towns like Salinas and Watsonville, erode public services, damage the environment, destroy decent unionized grocery jobs, and suck the life out of local communities up and down the central coast. If we stand up NOW, we can stop this catastrophe.

What can we do?

1. SPREAD THE WORD: send this message to your friends with a note asking THEM to take action. Send it too to larger email lists-- in your union, your church, your community.

2. COME TO THE MEETING at 240 Church St in downtown Salinas at 9:30 AM Monday-- SHARP!--if you can't come, send your husband or brother or friend. Call up your union rep and say "go and speak for us!!!"

3. RIGHT NOW click on this link: www.californianonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section... to register your views through the Salinas Californian's online poll asking "Should Monterey County supervisors use the general plan to prevent construction of big-box stores outside of cities?"

4. Join the Alliance for Good Jobs and Healthy Communities-- the new coalition born in resistance to this latest WalMart assault our communties-- by replying to this email with your name and contact info. We'll keep you informed and give you more opportunities to fight for good jobs and defend our communities.

Si se puede!

Re: STOP Wal-Mart from Coming to Your Community!

In your rush to Fight the Man and whatnot, do you ever stop to consider the collateral damage of your rash actions?

WalMart means more jobs. WalMart means benefits. WalMart means cheaper products, luxuries AND essentials, brings low-income local peoples closer to a LIVING WAGE by reducing OUR cost of living.

For you socialists, WalMart means more sales taxes and business taxes that flow into the city budget and thus your little tax-and-spend liberal hands.

Your cultish hatred of anything big and successful is really absurd. We need more AFFORDABLE stores like WalMart, stores that serve local needs unlike those overpriced tourist boutiques on Pacific.

Re: STOP Wal-Mart from Coming to Your Community!

Well actually, Walmart is likely to be built in Pajaro, thus draining Watsonville of tax income...

...Also, Walmart underpays its employees to the extent that many of them generally use up social services provided by the government. I realize corporations are profit motivated, I don't blame them for that - but I don't blame local communities for wanting to retain certain standards that are afforded to them by having more decent corporations...

Oh, and what jobs? You lose jobs from all the local businesses that used to prosper before a company that has over 70% of its products built in China...

Walmart is a shitty company, and I don't want Santa Cruz to turn into a big box wasteland.

" Well actually, Walmart is likely to be built in Pajaro, thus draining Watsonville of tax income..."

While providing the even-poorer town and residents of Pajaro with an equal boost in tax income. Is not their need greater?

"Walmart underpays its employees to the extent that many of them generally use up social services provided by the government."

Walmart also employs far more people, instead of only a few. This should bring a net reduction in social service dependence, which is a benefit to those who remain dependent to any degree.

Bottom line: Walmart brings more total money into the hands of the local community, especially blue collar workers.

"I don't blame local communities for wanting to retain certain standards that are afforded to them by having more decent corporations..."

"Corporations" are just companies which are just people. So "more decent corporations" really means "more decent people". You don't like the Walmart stockholders with controlling interest? You want "more decent people" in your community? So do many of the bigots here in Boulder Creek.

WalMart is not a shitty company. It saves low-income people a lot of money, offers a greater diversity of products needed by low- and medium-income households, and creates many more jobs than are lost if smaller stores can't compete. Fighting WalMart means fighting the people who would like to shop there. I can barely afford to live here as it is! WalMart can help.
And why do you so hate the workers of China? They're not the enemy, just people trying to make a living like me and you.

You probably fought against CostCo too. I'm glad you lost, and if my daughter were old enough to understand these issues, she would be glad too. We can afford to live better now, thanks to CostCo prices. Which is great when you haven't had a decent raise in 3 years because your boss is trying to keep his company local despite the horrendous burden of local taxation. Most companies have left Santa Cruz and California because local and state taxation and regulation has driven them to cheaper, freer states.

Boooo ---- Mall Wart is Bad

I put my $ where my mouth is and haven’t shopped at a Mall Wart in 4 years and I tell my children from ages 22 - 12 that until Mall Wart starts doing the right thing with there ethics with not only fair wages and health care but of supporting workers rights and not using unethical work tactics and cheating there employees out of time and benefits while they become the richest corporation and the shareholders are feeling their fat pockets and the poor people of America keep feeding at the trough of the corporate greed that ruined this country that in supporting all the garbage that they could actually have a change in by not endorsing the stores that act as Mall Wart does in their greedy ways, that they in protesting Mall Wart they are doing something about what is right in this country ..They are making the world better and standing up to and yes it may mean putting your wallet on the line, but by golly kids we deserve the right type of prices and the right type of pay. We need Honest Employers and Decent wages and non discrimination like Mall Wart has done numerous times to women and we want the best for the city and consumers who need good choices not one store that ran everyone who used to work in town out. Until Mall Wart pays fair and supports the rights to organize and treats human life with dignity I will pay more and shop anywhere "But" a Mall Wart store….I will write them …protest them …and force them to do what is right….You can thank me latter and I hope my kids will too.

Another example of why Santa Cruz County HAS NO STRONG ECONOMY.

You all express concern for low-wage workers. How about some fucking concern for the UNEMPLOYED? WE WANT WALMART. We'll never be doctors or lawyers, but why should we have to beg for even a low-wage retail job from the maybe ONE TOURIST BOUTIQUE HIRING THIS WEEK? We want choices! We want options! We want employers to HAVE to raise wages because employees can quit their job and go across the street to another job instead.

"While providing the even-poorer town and residents of Pajaro with an equal boost in tax income. Is not their need greater?"

Excellent, if we play the various municipalities off against each other, they will fight over ever shrinking business...

"Walmart also employs far more people, instead of only a few. This should bring a net reduction in social service dependence, which is a benefit to those who remain dependent to any degree."

Do they? Instead of there being a myriad of locally owned and operated businesses there is instead a single business with undue control... Watch as the employees try to unionize and Walmart simply shuts the store! Watch as Walmart tells its employees how to get on welfare because they pay them a pittance!

I have no problem with China - I merely mentioned that because I find it amusing considering how pro American Walmart claims to be - just like Ford claiming the same thing, it's somewhat shallow - it's the dishonesty that I don't like.

And no, I don't have a problem with Costco - they actually treat their employees as though they were human, a novel concept.

With Walmart there often isn't another store across the street because Walmart drives all the other businesses out due to their low low prices... which are garnered in part from their low low wages!

Do you really believe that? Corporations (and companies) are machines that run on people. They don't care who they're running on, as long as they're making a profit.

"How about some fucking concern for the UNEMPLOYED? WE WANT WALMART. We want choices! We want options! We want employers to HAVE to raise wages because employees can quit their job and go across the street to another job instead."
First off, speak for yourself. I'm unemployed, and I don't want Walmart. Secondly, Walmart won't raise wages, they'll just use you for a couple of months, and then hire some other poor fuck who is convinced that he "needs" a job.

"I don't have a problem with Costco - they actually treat their employees as though they were human, a novel concept."
You mean that Costco doesn't overtly exploit their employees. They treat their employees as employees, which basically means human progressing to machine-hybrid progressing to machine.

"Do you really believe that? Corporations (and companies) are machines that run on people."

I guess cars are just machines too, with no driver in control.

Every company is the property and the tool of its owners. People decide what the company does. Even publically-held corporations have a Board of Directors who have enough stock to qualify for voting power according to the corporations charter.

Pretending that corporations aren't really just people, is just an excuse to dehumanize the people you are so prejudiced against. Stop treating people like they don't exist. They have faces! They have names! They have families and friends and homes and history. And they have employees who want and need the jobs those bosses provide. People who don't have the LUXURIES you have of internet access and time to spent ranting on the Internet.

The US military should be held accountable for all the real people it hurts when it inflicts "collateral damage" in attacking Iraq.

Low-income employees, a group made up largely of people of color, of these companies you attack are the collateral damage of your attacks against WalMart and other successful corporations. We are all connected in the web of life, and your careless wreckless self-righteous crusading can create even more economic injustice. The real world is not black and white!

"Instead of there being a myriad of locally owned and operated businesses there is instead a single business with undue control..."

What hysterial nonsense! Everything else will close eh? Not half, not one tenth, not 1/50th of the businesses in and around town will close because of competition from WalMart. And those that do, were ripping off customers by charging too much when WalMart brings affordable pricing to low-income shoppers, transforming the precious few dollars we have left after paying sky-high gentrified rent, into a Living Wage so that we can live like human beings instead of peasant wage slaves!
You can obsess about "big boxes" but I LIKE MOST REAL PEOPLE will be buying baby food and milk and cleaning supplies and baby clothes and new dishes and new tires to get me to work. Welcome Wally World WE NEED YOU!

Broke Free of Mall-Wart's Grasp -- And Lived to Tell About It!

Guess what? I've lived in a place that was "lucky" to get a big old Wart in it. Guess what happened? Most all of the locally-owned business went out of business and it wrecked havoc on my community.

Little league teams didn't have sponsors so kids had to start paying high fees to play baseball. The kids from poor homes were out of luck.

At least one local bank had to shut down because Wart deposits ALL of their money (and this goes for EVERY SINGLE STORE) back to a bank in Arkansas. All the people who were promised fulfilling careers were left waiting around five, ten years, making $.25 - $1.50/hr. more, if they were extremely lucky. (Wal-Mart gave raises, if they did give them, in nickel and dime incriments.)

Mysteriously, after Wart's competitor's went out of business, their prices weren't so cheap and ,darn, they no longer had a that liberal return policy they'd based most of there business on.

After most of the competition was gone, Wart cut its employee health benefits (for the precious few who had worked themselves up to "full-time" status,) to the barest bones possible. Their excuse? They "couldn't afford it." That was an absolute lie! Again, the MEGA-CORPORATION hid behind their facade and did their dirty work through proxies. Fact: Mall-Wart's Stock has been one of the top grossers for last decade!

I consider Wart THE biggest contributor to the downfall of American industry. For those of you who weren't "lucky" enough to have a Wart around you, it was one of the first companies to bring in products made by wage slaves from other countries, primarily China. At the time, China was one of the world's major human rights violators and widely used prison labor to fuel their burgeoning manufacturing sector. Other discounters (or their subsidiaries) felt the need to match the prices of Wart and began to use labor from sweatshops overseas. That race to the bottom is now history.

Even the hype about Wart's low prices is bunk. Any smart shopper can stock up on items on sale at other stores and do BETTER than shopping at Wart, which doesn't have sales. For non-expendable items, nothing beats the goodwill of Goodwill, garage sales, the swap meet and, yes, the trash heap! I would know. I've been a single parent, lived on a HALF A SHOESTRING and didn't starve, though I've learned to love 99 ways with rice and beans!

Let's rally against this big bully that wants to destroy our communities and way of life! I know I can definitely live without cheap plastic CRAP. How about you?!?

Um, The jobs Walmart will provide are by and large are that of a peasant wage slave. Also, numerous studies have shown that Walmart actually depresses local economies, and a report states that for every job Walmart has created, 1.5 jobs were lost...

...How does Walmart provide those delightfully low prices? Magic? Or minimum wage - hell, the company has released pamphlets telling their employees how to get on welfare - there's that corporate responsibility you must be referring to!

You can talk about how cheap everything is there - but what you don't seem to realize is that things are cheap because of Walmart's practices - which ultimately do more harm than good.

Re: STOP Wal-Mart from Coming to Your Community!

I think it would be a good idea to prevent walmart liberalization of the pajaro community.

This has little to do with "hatred of anything big and successful" rather real people have been devastated by walmart in the past and are acting out on that devastation. Its true that walmart makes cheep crap from china more accessible to lower-income families which is important for self-worth in a culture dominated by an ideology material wealth.

But there are other models for archiving self worth. Our community choice about walmart should not be only about survival, we can aim higher than that.

Personally I am inspired by reclaimed factories operating in Argentina. People feel valued there and their work reflects this sense of empowerment.

They make factory decisions democratically and have no over arching government or corporate hierarchy. People are first rather than profits and the productivity of these factories shows that this a stronger motivator than the brutal labor economics of working to survive at whatever price the government regulations or corporate hierarchy cares to pay you.

We can collectively aim much higher than walmart.

Re: STOP Wal-Mart from Coming to Your Community!

So what if locally owned stores go out of business, they can't provide products at low cost. I want to get more for my money so I welcome walmart!

I don't spend my money locally anyway. I go to salinas, gilroy, or san jose. They have Walmart and any other low priced chain. I save money even with the gas i burn to get there and back.
