ALF Liberates Entire Deer Population from GNK Deer Farm

San Miguel, CA- In the early morning hours of January 18, members of the Animal Liberation Front liberated the entire imprisoned deer population of GNK Deer Farm in Monterey County, California. These deer were doomed to certain death at the early age of 18 months at the hand of owner Gerd Konieczny, a former butcher and LA cop who raises the deer for profit and fun, by his own admission. A commenter writes: A few questions that I hope were / or will be considered in the future:

1) What deer species was this? Was it a local native species and subspecies or was it a non-native deer released with many harmful potential long-term impacts on local native flora and fauna. Alien species introduced into new habitats by humans is a leading cause of extinction. If this was not considered it should be considered in the future.

2) How many deer were released? Will local deer starve as a result of the increased population? What will be the impact on some of the very endangered local plant species in Monterey County?

Elise Cohen of The Fellowship Of Reconciliation talks about upcoming delegations to Israel

George Cadman of Free Radio Santa Cruz, 101.1 fm, interviews Elise Cohen of the Fellowship of Reconciliation about her work with the organization and the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. George's show is called "Peace Talks" and is on Sundays from 3 to 6 pm.

Elise Cohen is a Sephardic Jew, born in Atlanta, Georgia. She is co vice-chair of the National Council of the Fellowship of Reconciliation. She has lived in Israel and worked with Palestinians and Israelis. She has also led three delegations to the Middle East, to Israel/Palestine and Iraq.

She will be leading a discussion on Wednesday, Jan. 26th at the Monterey Senior Center. The event starts at 7 pm. and is a strategy session to make commitments to Middle East peace work. The Monterey Peace and Justice Center is sponsoring the event.

Dr. Stephen Zunes responds to Bush Inauguration Speech

George Cadman of Free Radio Santa Cruz (; 101.1 fm.) interviews Professor Stephen Zunes about the Bush inauguration speech.
Stephen Zunes received his B.A. from Oberlin College, his M.A. from Temple University, and his Ph.D. from Cornell University. Dr. Zunes serves as Middle East editor for the Foreign Policy in Focus Project and was their senior policy analyst during his 2001-2002 sabbatical year. He also serves an associate editor of Peace Review and as a research associate at the Center for Global, International and Regional Studies at the University of California--Santa Cruz.
Zunes has presented numerous lectures and conference papers in the United States and over a dozen foreign countries. He is active in several professional organizations, including the governing council of the International Peace Research Association. He has traveled frequently to the Middle East and other conflict regions and has served as a political analyst for National Public Radio and Pacifica Radio, the British Broadcasting Corporation and MSNBC, and has appeared as well on numerous television and radio talk shows. He has published scores of articles in academic journals, anthologies, magazines, and newspaper op-ed pages on topics such as U.S. foreign policy, Middle Eastern politics, Latin American politics, social movements and nonviolent action.
Stephen Zunes is also the author of two books. His most recent book is "Tinderbox: U.S. Middle East Policy and the Roots of Terrorism".
