-- State officials say the Big Sur area is one of the hardest hit by the tree-killing disease
known as sudden oak death.

Hundreds of logs are piled in a heap near the campground at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
Theyre waiting to be burned.
Monterey County has been pretty much spared by the ailment, which has done most of its
damage in Marin County and the Santa Cruz Mountains.
State ecologist Tom Moss says the park has had to cut down more than 450 trees in busy
areas over the past two years. Moss says he expects 200 more will have to go in the next
six months in the area around the campground.
Thousands more trees stand dead in the park.
Moss says one campsite which used to be dominated by oaks and tanoaks is now dotted
with stumps, and the sun shines where quiet shadows once ruled.
Sudden oak death is a new disease identified just two years ago. Howeverexperts say
its related to the pathogen which cause the Irish potato famine.
