VANDENBERG AFB -- Opponents of a U.S. war against Iraq
have a date to meet at Vandenberg Air Force Base's
front gate, if war breaks out.

A Web site and fliers tout the plans of protesters,
who come from various organizations that operate under
the umbrella of the Vandenberg Action Coalition.

"If the government launches a new attack on Iraq --
and on May 17, 2003 -- concerned people will converge
on Vandenberg's breathtakingly beautiful coast for a
nonviolent security zone occupation to challenge,
confront and disrupt its global surveillance, weapons
targeting and guidance satellite launch complex (also
used to guide nuclear missiles and Star Wars
weapons,)" the Web site says.

For the past few years, the base has been the meeting
ground for twice-a-year protests from those opposing
missile defense and military space programs.

"It will be peaceful, that I can guarantee you," said
Bud Boothe, a Los Olivos resident and long-time
protester at Vandenberg.

The May 17 protest coincides with Armed Forces Day.
But as the United States appears to have exhausted
diplomatic options and heads for war, protesters plan
to meet up on the Central Coast. They initially aimed
for the first Saturday after attacks, but have since
revised plans.

"Based upon further reflection, we're going to try to
be there and start moving into action as soon as we
possibly can when the attack is actually launched,"
said Peter Lumsdaine, an activist from the Bay area.

Protesters are urged to meet at the Vandenberg action
peace camp land, reportedly in the Santa Ynez Valley
area.

Civil disobedience actions would be up to individuals
and groups, but training has taken place at locations
around the state, activists said.

Base officials noted that they support protesters
First Amendment rights to stage a peaceful
demonstration at the Main Gate.

"We will take whatever measures are necessary to
prevent them from damaging assets or hurting people,"
said Maj. Stacee Bako, a Vandenberg spokeswoman.
"We're concerned as well that they don't hurt
themselves, because one time a couple of them had to
be rescued themselves."

A few years ago, Greenpeace protesters aboard rubber
rafts tried to reach Vandenberg from the sea to
interfere with a missile defense system test. Two
protesters wound up at Marian Medical Center for
treatment of exposure after dealing with the cold
waters of the Pacific Ocean.

In recent years, authorities have arrested dozens of
activists, primarily for trespassing during protests.

A New Day

With the nation at war and men under fire this sort of BS is serious business. The internationalists should either get the hell out of the USA or shut up. There is no "non-violent" protest in a war. The act of deteriorating our military capability directly harms the soldiers at risk. Therefore lethal force should be used at any provocation if only as an example to the rest of these spoiled rotten little dweebs. The risk is great to the nation and it should be even greater to traitors.

Thank God

Hopefuly, the AF will stop all threats at the gate with deterrence. However, if not, I totally support lethal force. Are you willing to die to give a terrorist cover to enter an AF facility? The American public will not support activists who interfere with national security. If you do so, you are a terrorist plain and simple. Don't even think about it. You want to demonstrate OUTSIDE, it is your right. We won't like it and you will lose support BIG TIME! I am an old anti-Vietnam war demonstrator and you are totally out of your league and have lost vision of what America is all about. We, patriotic Americans, are all about our way of life, freedom and security. If you do go there, you will probably encounter force, but outside the gates from the public who likes being protected by the military and ALL OF ITS MIGHT. You are hypocritical because you were not there when Clinton initiated his war efforts without UN approval. So, there you have it. Your are not driven by conscience but rather by politics.....your efforts are transparent and you efforts will be viewed in that context. Don't interfere with our national security. You will regret it!

get off your high horse

Get off your high horse ellie. You were lucky enough to be born into this nation and you are right that most americans are simply about their way of life. We all know bush just wants to go to war rather than let the UN do its job because of the oil and to preserve "our way of life". It's time for us to think about other people and the effects our wastefulness has on them!

Make Sense of THIS!

"If the government launches a new attack on Iraq --
and on May 17, 2003 -- concerned people will converge
on Vandenberg's breathtakingly beautiful coast for a
nonviolent security zone occupation to challenge,
confront and disrupt its global surveillance, weapons
targeting and guidance satellite launch complex (also
used to guide nuclear missiles and Star Wars
weapons,)" the Web site says.

Saying this makes it clear that you have no concern for American lives, or your own lives for that matter. By doing exactly what you state in the above paragraph your placing the lives of people who are defending your right to protest! And posibbly paying the ultimate price, and for what! So you can protest and cause undue hardship and strain on families who already have so much to deal with in their day to day lives, then you go and protest on Armed Forces Day! A day thats suppose to give thanks and support to the men and woman who are giving you every right that you take advantage of to the fullest I'm sure! I just aske you this! Why not try to understand what our government is trying to do for the world not just our country! An evil murdering tyran has no bussiness in power of a country!
