GREEN PRESIDENTIAL "VIRTUAL PRIMARY" HAS CT. GREENS TALKING

Hartford, CT. - Connecticut Green Party officials announced today that a online "Virtual Primary" for a Green Presidential Candidate has local Greens buzzing about who or even what to do about the 2004 Presidential Election.

ISwitched.Org is launching a "virtual" Green Party Presidential Nomination Primary. The ISwitched.Org Primary has three goals: highlighting actual and potential Green Party presidential candidates that were excluded from the MoveOn.org "virtual primary"; allowing Green Party members and sympathizers to demonstrate early support for particular candidates; and demonstrating the use of Instant Runoff Voting, a system which allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference.

Connecticut native Ralph Nader, the Green Party nominee in '96 and 2000, former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, Green Party activists Paul Glover, David Cobb, and Lorna Salzman, as well as progressive Democrats Howard Dean and Dennis Kucinich are listed by the site. A "None of the Above" spot may also be listed to register support if the Green Party should not run any candidate for President.

Green Party activist and CT. leader of the "Draft Nader 2004" committee, Tim McKee said "No decision has been made on whether or not to run a Presidential Candidate. This "Virtual Primary" by "ISwitched.org", a Green Party activist web site, was set up after growing interest in a MoveOn.org online poll that some say will split the progressive votes.

McKee added some wanted Nader's name included on the MoveOn.org site but he was exclude. He explained some Greens are crossing over to slant the MoveOn.org poll to progressives Democrats like Kucinich or Dean.

Voters can register for the ISwitched.Org Green Party Presidential Nomination Primary at www.iswitched.org/dc03/

The candidates initially listed in the ISwitched.Org primary (more may be added during the initial "registration" period, which will last until the evening of July 2nd) were selected on the basis of declared interest in running, as expressed to the Green Party of the United States' Presidential Exploratory Committee, declared intent to run elsewhere, and the site manager's personal evaluation that the substantial support exists for their candidacy among Green Party members and sympathizers nationwide.
