Announcing the Santa Cruz Anarchist Infoshop!

Come check out the space and get involved.

Several of us have been collecting books and zines for well over a year in the hopes that one day we could find an affordable space to create an infoshop (not likely in Santa Cruz). But as luck would have it, the opportunity arose and a call out to the local anarchist community was spread and we've secured the space with some trials and tribulations and (some how) managed to keep it open for a few months thus far.

So we'd like to invite you and all your friends to come check out what we've created.

Read the full article to find out what we offer, what we're working on, some projects we'd like to see, and how you can help out.

Infoshop
509 Broadway
Santa Cruz, CA. 95060
We've been open since April 1st (fools) and we are just getting around to internet publicity.

So as we're settling in here, working out all the kinks in getting committed people to staff and how to manage the finances, I thought I'd give you an update on what we've been up to.

What we offer:

-We have books and zines for sale. The best zine selection I've ever seen.

-We have a great book lending library.

-We have a reference section with some not-so-common publications available to read while there.

-A space to have meetings and do projects (just clean up after yourselves:)

-A ride-board for hitching, train-hopping, and carpooling.

-A Mac and PC with DSL (for email, web publishing, graphics design, etc.)

-We've started an herb library of local wild plants & herbs for tea, medicinal uses, etc. - we're gathering local herbs and keeping them at the 'shop for people to use and become familiar with, and we've got books on wild plants & herbs available as well. Stop in for a free cup of tea. (ethnobotanists get in touch, we'd like to learn more about our local flora).

-A bulletin board of events and happenings.

-And lots more...

What we're working on:

-Promoting the infoshop. Our biggest hitch right now is that hardly anyone knows we're here. You can help! Tell your friends, forward this announcement elsewhere, distribute flyers.

-A website about the infoshop and community happenings in Santa Cruz.

-Getting the Freeskool off the ground again.

-Improving the library.

-Getting more regular events happening (attention local community: we need your help!)

-Getting self-publishing resources available. Printer donations appreciated.

Some projects we'd like to see:

-Indigenous solidarity: Something like Solidarity South Pacific in the UK.

-A local anarchist paper/bulletin.

-Prisoner Support

-An anarchist discussion group.

How you can help us:

-We are looking for donations of books, videos, zines, publications, and newspapers - so send your favorites our way.

-Financial contributions, especially monthly ongoing contributors. It's hard to make rent! Those who donate $10* or more per month get some free zines/publications and some organic vegan chocolate - oh yeah! Contact us if you're interested.

-Sponsor a subscription: email us for a listing of publications we want to distribute. If you have a publication, consider sending us a subscription.

-We need commited, self-motivated, friendly people to help staff, fundraise, keep the place clean and organized, and create regular events. Come by the space and talk to us if you're interested.

Also, Quiver Zine Distribution would like to offer a great deal to help us raise some funds for our various projects. They'll send out big boxes of 100+ zines for $30-60 sliding scale. So all zine distributors, tablers, zine freaks, and others should get in touch and send an email to quiver (at) hush.com for a listing of the zines available. The extensive collection covers topics such as anarchist theory and critique. DIY how-to guides/direct action, radical & womyns health, destroying patriarchy, critiques of civilization, deconstructing gender, ecological defense, indigenous resistance, historical revolutionary movements, wilderness/primitive skills, and much more.

Cheers!

Re: Announcing the Santa Cruz Anarchist Infoshop!

July 5th, 2004
PSA- Please distribute this information.

Today the recently opened Anarchist Infoshop at 509 Broadway was served
a one month notice of terminating our rental contract with the Resource
Center for Nonviolence. This came as much of a surprise to us, because
until today we have not received any warning or notice of complaints.

In a scheduled meeting with an infoshop volunteer, Bob Fitch (RCNV property
manager), handed over the letter and informed us that he was terminating
our rental agreement and that it was not negotiable. He went on to list
a series of complaints about our use of the space, claiming there were
two pages of them (though he won't provide us with the list). Bob says
that our presence in the space, and 'our smell' is interfering with his
ability to rent the adjacent offices. He also explained that if his decision
was challenged by a sit-down or occupation of the space, money for all
the RCNV's legal fees would be charged to the individual who signed our
lease.

We are asking people to call/write Bob and the Resource Center for Nonviolence
in support of us keeping the space here, though the situation doesn't
look at all hopeful.
RCNV email: information (at) rcnv.org / phone: 831-423-1626
Bob’s email: bobfitch (at) rcnv.org

If we are forced to vacate our space at 509 Broadway, we will do everything
we can to start up again in a new location. Anyone who knows of a potential
rental situation, or who could share space with us, please get in touch.

One idea is to get a group of people together to start a new co-op house
in town, with the infoshop incorporated within it. (in the living room,
etc?). The house could be a lively venue for community happenings like
open mics, potluck dinners, movie nights, touring events, live music
(?), have a wonderful garden and much-needed space for local projects,
etc. Of course for a co-op to happen, we need a good house (we could
do a lot of fixin' up), and people who are willing to be renters. (or
a house we could somehow purchase or use?) Once again, get in touch if
you're interested!

We've been located at 509 Broadway for about four months now, and we
were just getting settled in. If you haven't been by the infoshop before,
please come by and check out the space. We'll still be open seven days
a week 3pm-7pm until the end of July. If the infoshop is something you
value having in this town, consider helping us find a new location.

Those of you who have library materials checked out, please be sure to
return them in the next few weeks. Also, the anarchist lending library
will need a temporary home/storage space after we loose ours. (So if
anyone really likes to read...)

What is the infoshop?
We house(d) a community lending library, zines and books for sale, a
collection of locally foraged herbs and tea for free use, free computer/internet
access, meeting space for local groups, and the only existing public
center in town to get connected with local radical projects and community.
The infoshop has a focus on anarchist theory and analysis towards inspiring
direct action with a radical anti-authoritarian critique of the existent
social order. We want to make a space that will connect various projects
and social cliques and provide a springboard for local action, to create
momentum.
We feel that some form of public space like our infoshop is essential
to developing a revolutionary community in Santa Cruz, and we are very
sad (angry) to be losing our space. But we're not easily discouraged,
and if enough people in this big town want it to happen, a new infoshop
can take root.

Thanks to anyone who has supported us in these past few months.
And no thanks to the Resource Center for Nonviolence and associated tenants
for not even communicating with us about their concerns.

Re: Announcing the Santa Cruz Anarchist Infoshop!

I was just told by a friend that a Peace Action volunteer said the Berkeley Anarchist Infoshop has put out voter recommendations.

As incongruous as this seems I believe it but cannot find any evidence.

Anyone know anything about this? I would like to see this if it exists. Thanks.

Re: Announcing the Santa Cruz Anarchist Infoshop!

the last slingshot had an article titled "anarchist voting guide" basically talking about how (not) voting doesn't change anything. that might have been it...slingshot is run out of the long haul infoshop.

Re: Announcing the Santa Cruz Anarchist Infoshop!

I checked the Cruzio building a couple of months ago and there was a good deal on a 150 sq ft space, $295 per month. They want a 1 year lease.

Re: Announcing the Santa Cruz Anarchist Infoshop!

Scott Kennedy does it again!

Re: Announcing the Santa Cruz Anarchist Infoshop!

I'm moving to Santa Cruz in January. I would like to live and work with fellow anarchists. Anyone who can help me get set up or would like my help please e-mail me. I hope to meet you in several months.
