Students and Teachers Speak Out to Make SVHS a Safe Space

More than 300 students, parents, teachers, and administrators turned out at Scotts Valley High School on February 7 for a special board meeting to address charges that the school promotes a "Gay Agenda." Board members determined that Scotts Valley High is acting in compliance with AB 537, The California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act of 2000 which prohibits discrimination and harassment on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity in California public schools.

By far the most moving and important words came from students and from teachers. They spoke of the need for open dialogue and education about issues regarding safety and respect. They spoke of the ways they have gone about creating a space for this dialogue and education. They showed that there are problems at the school and that the faculty and administration have identified ways that they can and should be dealt with. They spoke of vandalism, intimidation, fear, violence, name-calling, intolerance. They spoke of communication, solutions, encouraging discussion, education, and dialogue. In short, they demonstrated before the large assembled crowd that they are doing their jobs in a way that deserves our applause.

UC wages lag behind CSU, Community Colleges and Kaiser

Researched by the National Economic Development and Law Center (NEDLC), the report finds that despite UC’s high profile as a premier public institution of learning and opportunity, 46% of UC service employees earn wages that would not meet basic needs for a family with two parents working full-time and raising two children, if both adults earned the amount paid by UC. 35% earn wages insufficient to support only the employee and 93% percent earn wages that would not meet basic needs for a single adult raising a child.

In Hot Water with SpongeBob SquarePants

>SpongeBob SquarePants is known all over the world. He has his own cartoon show on Nickelodeon and people of all ages seem to have at least one toy or product with his image on it. Having just been on the big screen, he had the spotlight on him long before James Dobson and his group, Focus on the Family, launched their attack on him accusing the sponge of being "pro-homosexual" and tolerant of people of different sexual orientations.

SpongeBob recently agreed to meet with the RW at his home--a pineapple under the sea--to talk about all the controversy surrounding him and what is at the heart of it. What follows is an unedited transcript of our conversation.

The Intolerable Conviction of Lynne Stewart

Revolutionary Worker #1268, February 20, 2005, posted at

"I see myself as being a symbol of what the people rail against when they say our civil liberties are eroded. This case could be, I hope it will be, a wakeup call to all of the citizens of this country and all of the people who live here that you can’t lock up the lawyers. You can’t tell the lawyers how to do their job. You’ve got to let them operate. And I will fight on. I am not giving up. I know I commited no crime. I know what I did was right."

Attorney Lynne Stewart, after her Feb. 10 conviction on felony charges

In April 2002, then U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft personally announced to the news media that the government had indicted radical civil rights attorney Lynne Stewart on serious charges of "conspiracy, providing material support to terrorists and defrauding the U.S. government."
