SCRAM Takes Care of the Dead Air; 101.1 FM is Free

Santa Cruz Radio Access Movement (SCRAM) is acting autonomously and in support of Free Radio Santa Cruz (FRSC).

SCRAM was created to liberate the airwaves for the people of Santa Cruz. Our first action has been the liberation of 101.1 FM for Santa Cruz and neighboring communities. SCRAM is broadcasting Free Radio Santa Cruz's web stream 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

SCRAM encourages other people to take action! Free the airwaves by broadcasting alternative media sources such as Free Radio Santa Cruz. If you can't hear SCRAM where you live, then start a Radio Access Movement in your community.

Free Radio Santa Cruz Is Reviewing All Options

At present, the Free Radio Santa Cruz collective is reviewing all options to move forward with our news, music, and artistic programming. We are streaming on the web and encourage you to listen in. We are actively asking for help from our community of friends and supporters. We are only able to remain on the air because of the commitment by our collective members and the help of our community. If you are a listener of Free Radio Santa Cruz, please help us maintain the public airwaves by making a donation. At this time money and free legal help is needed to secure our future so that we may continue to meet the diverse needs of our community.

FRSC is part of a growing micro-radio movement, supporting the work of other independent media and other pirate and noncommercial web and broadcast stations. Our city councilmembers passed a resolution in support of our radio as a vital community resource and Congress member Sam Farr has written a letter to the FCC/congress opposing their misuse of funds and energy. Letters in support of us to the FCC, and local media outlets are much appreciated.

Mike Ruppert: The Truth and Lies of 9/11

Mike Ruppert founded the print newsletter and website From the Wilderness in March 1998. FTW is now read by more than 16,000 subscribers in 40 countries. Since 9/11/01, he has been the point man in breaking major stories involving government foreknowledge, corruption, and violations of the Constitution. He has also pioneered the effort to educate the world about the consequences of Peak Oil - the fact that the world is running out of hydrocarbon energy and what this might mean for human civilization.

On Wednesday, October 20, Mike Ruppert gave a presentation on The Truth & Lies of 9/11 and The Consequences of Peak Oil.

FBI Seizes Indymedia Servers in the UK

On the morning of Thursday, October 7, US authorities issued a federal order to Rackspace ordering them to hand over information hosted on Indymedia web servers to the FBI. Rackspace, which provides hosting services for more that 20 Indymedia sites at its London facility, complied by turning over two Indymedia servers to federal authorities, effectively removing those sites from the internet.

Indymedia, a global network of independent non-corporate media organzations, had been asked last month by the FBI to remove a story about Swiss undercover police from one of the websites hosted at Rackspace. It is not known whether Thursday's order is related to that incident, however, since the order was issued to Rackspace and not to Indymedia. According to Rackspace, they "cannot provide Indymedia with any information regarding the order." ISPs have received gag orders in similar situations which prevent them from informing concerned parties about what is happening.

It is unclear to Indymedia how and why a server that is outside US jurisdiction can be seized by US authorities.

Free Radio Santa Cruz RAIDED by the FCC and US Marshals

At 8:20 AM on Wednesday, September 29, armed US Marshals and FCC Agents raided the house from which Free Radio Santa Cruz broadcasts. Agents entered with guns drawn, showing the warrant to a couple of residents but not serving the warrant to anyone at that time. All residents, some wearing only their bathrobes and PJ's, were herded to the sidewalk in front of their house.

Free Radio Santa Cruz was airing Democracy Now! at 37 watts as the FCC Agents and US Marshals (we counted at least 16) worked to get into the studio. By this time FRSC 101.1 FM was airing a pre-programmed interview with Howard Zinn. This interview, in which Zinn read poems by Langston Hughes and Bob Dylan and cited Zora Neal Hurston’s comments against WW2, was in progress when the signal was taken off the air. Listeners of FRSC heard the sound of static for the first time ever due to governmental interference.

Agents videoed community members who lined the street and crowded onto the sidewalk in front of the house in support of the station. Residents were not allowed to bring cameras into their home, nor were they allowed entrance without first having their bags searched.

Freak Radio has been raided after almost 10 years of broadcasting for the Santa Cruz community and listeners around the world via online streaming. FRSC has received strong support from members of the community (audio mp3), including Representative Sam Farr, Mayor Scott Kennedy (audio mp3) and the Santa Cruz City Council.
