Gap vandal fined cleanup fee

Gap vandal fined cleanup fee
Sentinel staff writer

A man caught vandalizing The Gap storefront on Pacific Avenue must pay the city’s clean-up costs, a $500 fine, serve 200 hours of community service and stay away from downtown, a judge ordered on Tuesday.

Michael Henderson, 22, was charged with vandalism for throwing green paint on the front doors of The Gap on Jan. 3, said Julie Hendee of the city Redevelopment Agency.

The agency is responsible for graffiti abatement in the city.

Hendee said it cost $1,000 to rid the store’s doors and sidewalk of the paint.

"It was wet and oozing all over the place and threatening to go into the storm drain," she said. "People think they’re hurting The Gap by doing this. They’re not hurting The Gap, it’s hurting the city."

Henderson was caught after trailing green paint from Pacific Avenue to Mission Street where he lives.

The agency spends up to $2,000 every month erasing graffiti from various spots around Santa Cruz, Hendee said.

She said it’s rare for vandalism perpetrators to be caught.

Announcement :: Civil & Human Rights

Free County Project (Liberty Districts_USA)

I invite all voluntaryists(anarchists) to unite for the purpose of
establishing an oasis of freedom in an unfree world. Help pick a
location where every social interaction is voluntary and without
deprivation of life, liberty, or property. We suffer because we are
outnumbered and overpowered by those who believe that security and
prosperity may be gained by sacrificing rights. If we migrate until
we are the majority, then we gain the power we now lack. Stop
talking about how bad things are getting. Help create a new unique
community and let the world see first hand what freedom can do for
them. As bad as it is, this is still the freest and therefore the
best country to found our new community. If you agree with me,
then give me your name and contact info.
Toward freedom,
Don Duncan

P.S.: I have chosen Alpine county, CA but I am open to debate.

A Call for decentralized, local actions around the world on Jan 20

We call on the people of the empire to use their privilege of living
within the empire to stop it from functioning on January 20th, 2005,
the day that George W. Bush is to be inaugurated the next president of
the U.S. Together, we can stop the gears of global capitalism from
turning. We call for actions across the U.S. and around the world
which are focused on stopping the machinery of war and global
capitalism. These actions include both mass mobilizations, street
parties, Civil Disobedience and Direct Action as well as Assembleas
Populares, Encuentros and other forms of real, direct democracy.

Alongside the bodies in the streets, we also call for networks of
electronic civil disobedience, hacktivism, and tactical media to join
in the struggle. Against the bio-electronic forms of empire dominating
the conduits of capital, media, and everyday life, we make this call in
the spirit of the Critical Art Ensemble, Conglomco, RTMArk, and all the
radio pirates and Indymedia centers worldwide.

Our appetite for fish is exceeding the oceans' limits

Scientists are warning that overfishing results in profound changes in our oceans, perhaps changing them forever. Not to mention our dinner plates, which in future may only feature fish and chips as a rare and expensive delicacy.

Almost everywhere you look, regulation of fishing vessels is woefully inadequate - fish stocks are plummeting and little regard is paid to the resulting impacts on marine ecosystems. More often than not, the fishing industry is given access to fish stocks before the impact of their fishing can be assessed.

The reality of modern fishing is that the industry is dominated by fishing vessels that far out-match nature's ability to replenish fish. Giant ships using state-of-the-art fish-finding sonar can pinpoint schools of fish quickly and accurately. The ships are fitted out like giant floating factories - containing fish processing and packing plants, huge freezing systems, fishmeal processing plants, and powerful engines to drag enormous fishing gear through the ocean. Put simply: the fish don't stand a chance.

War Profiteers The Center for Corporate Policy's Top Ten War Profiteers of 2004

Stop the War Profiteers. No-bid contracts given out to corporations with connections to the administration, and recent reports about cost overruns and shoddy reconstruction suggest the need for stronger accountability and transparency. In addition, companies that avoid paying their fair share in taxes or have a history of violations of law should be deemed ineligible for taxpayer-funded contracts. For more information click HERE.
