This is a chance for Felton residents and others in the San Lorenzo Valley to get involved in independent media and support their own community radio node. With the ongoing FLOW/CalAm struggle, we are ready for more local independent voices in our community.
Friday January 21st from 7pm to 11pm
Felton Grocery Outlet parking lot
We'll be helped out by Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In, Felton FLOW, Grocery Outlet, Santa Cruz Indymedia Project, and a few other groups. We'll have food, entertainment, inspiring speakers, a feature film, and a few great short films. We'll have popcorn, drinks, cookies, and maybe musical entertainment.
We'll have a few special guests talking about the need for independent media. More local media voices in our community means more help with our local struggle.

About the Felton Radio Access Project
FRAP is an autonomous collection of Felton residents who want more local access to independent alternative media. Following in the footsteps of the Santa Cruz Radio Access Movement (SCRAM) who returned Free Radio Santa Cruz to the airwaves after their FCC bust, we will be creating a local Felton Free Radio node to give voice to our local struggles.

Speakers at Felton Free Radio Benefit
In fact, as supporters of independent media, this might be the hardest struggle we face: convincing people who don't feel they are part of the fringe that their struggle for freedom, autonomy, and self-sufficiency is ours and vice versa. We want to truly connect with our neighbors' concerns about controlling our own water, our own lives, our own media and information.
We hope to have speakers from Felton FLOW, Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In, Santa Cruz Indymedia, and maybe Santa Cruz Free Radio or SCRAM.
Any other local or regional organizations you can think of who are dedicated to free speech who might be inspiring to hear from? If you have any suggestions for great speakers at the benefit, drop us a line.
Some Background on Low-Power FM Radio
Until 1982, there were low-power (under 100 Watts) unlicensed FM stations in communities all over the country. At that time, Congress passed the Telecommunications Act of 1982 making unlicensed low-power FM stations illegal. The FCC turned over our airwaves mostly to corporations who could afford the millions of dollars that these increasingly expensive FM stations fetched. Thousands of locally-run, low-power independent community radio stations went dark in 1982.
With media consolidation one company now can own dozens of radio and TV stations in one area, virtually controlling the news and information for whole communities. ClearChannel and Viacom are two examples. In the last month, for instance, FoxNews contracted to provide all of the news heard on the 1500 radio stations owned by ClearChannel nationwide. Naturally, one company owning all of the media reduces the diversity of voices heard in local communities and seriously threatens the idea of a free press.
Strictly speaking, an unlicensed station is not currently legal. However, through this simple civil disobedience, FRAM is working to change the law that turns over control of our airwaves to largely corporate interests.
At first our Felton station will broadcast the web stream of other local stations, some of which offer a mix of talk and music, most of it local programming. We'll include Democracy Now! and a host of other great programs, local, regional, and national.
