Evelyn Schoenfeld's last two letters:

August 18, 2002

To: Senator Bruce McPherson
re: AB 1421

Dear Senator McPherson,

I am alarmed and deeply dismayed by the proposal to enact legislation which would classify some patients as not having the ability to decide for themselves what medications they should use for what may appear to be a "mental condition."

This strikes me as being very coersive when there is absolutely no evidence that this policy would work any better than voluntary treatment. In addition, the cost will be prohibitive at a time when people are losing their jobs and the state coffers are empty.

I am also aware that the pharmaceutical companies have had undue influence in pushing this legislation from which they will make tremendous profits.

I expect, as my representative that you will vote "NO" on AB 1421.

I am enclosing a self-addressed stamped envelope in which I ask that you inform me how you voted.

Thank-you very much for your prompt attention to this matter.

Respectfully yours,

Ms.Evelyn J.Schoenfeld

to: Mayor Christopher Krohn
re: Downtown Ordinances

August 18, 2002

Dear Mayor Krohn,

I am writing to commend you on your courage in voting against the downtown ordinances.

It goes against the character of Santa Cruz to ban bubble-blowers, street musicians, political tables, jugglers, frisbees, hacky-sackers, clowns, magicians, and homeless people holding signs.

The real problems we are facing are vandalism, drug-dealing, shop-lifting, the sexual harassment, and not enough bathrooms downtown. When the downtown ordinances come up on your September 10th agenda, I urge you to again speak out that these ordinances were passed in haste, do nothing to address the real problems, and are ultimately destructive to homeless people.

I would ask that you call for the suspension of the enforcement of these ordinances given the many concerns of civil rights organizations.

The character and the quality of Santa Cruz has been diminished by these ordinances.

LET SANTA CRUZ BE SANTA CRUZ!

Thanks again for voting for what is right and not bending to political expediancey.

-- Respectfully yours,

Ms. Evelyn J. Schoenfeld
