Stundets for Labor Solidarity (SLS) actions at UCSC

The dates and times for picketing are:

FRIDAY SEPT. 13th 1pm-6pm @ the base of campus

SATURDAY SEPT. 14th 9am-3pm @ the base of campus

SUNDAY SEPT. 15th 9am-3pm @ the base of campus

SUNDAY SEPT. 15th 5pm @ the quarry for the chancellor's convocation
On Thursday September 5, 2002, a brand new student organization at UC Santa Cruz called Students for Labor Solidarity (SLS) held a rally with about 140 people (the biggest rally so far). Hopefully once school starts, SLS can begin to get students out in numbers and double the size of these rallies!

Here is some information about some upcoming actions
during move-in weekend:

Univeristy Labor United (ULU) (a coalition of all the
unions on campus) is putting together an informational picket. The goal is not to stop traffic, but rather to slow traffic down and pass out information to all the new students and their parents about the bad labor practices of
UCSC. ULU has a lot of union members signed up to work the picket, but they still need more folks, and it would really mean a lot if we (as students) could help out. It would show union members that students are willing to work with them and it would also make a bigger impact on new
students if they saw other students out there.

The dates and times for picketing are:

FRIDAY SEPT. 13th 1pm-6pm @ the base of campus

SATURDAY SEPT. 14th 9am-3pm @ the base of campus

SUNDAY SEPT. 15th 9am-3pm @ the base of campus

SUNDAY SEPT. 15th 5pm @ the quarry for the chancellor's convocation

If you can make it out to any of these times even for just a few hours it would be super helpful.

SLS Rocks

Dear Students for Labor Solidarity:

As a member of CUE and of the working community here in Santa Cruz, I thank you for your support and very visible coalition building. Without aware students, we would not have a job here in Santa Cruz. Your organizing is key to our fight for a living wage, solutions to the regressive parking rate structure, and the housing crisis that affects us all! We need each other. Thank you for your time and energy!

I appreciate your support

Thanks so much for supporting us!! I believe that you (the students) will make the difference... The University will listen to those who bring in the revenue. Thanks just doesn't express the fullness of our gratitude. I hope that we will see you at the future rallies. See you at the pickets!!

We need your support!

I just wanted to thank all of the students who have expressed their supprt for our labor struggle here at UCSC, and the many who will do so in the near future. We need your support to win a fair contract from the University system. You students, of all the people here at UCSC, know how difficult it is to find affordable housing locally, especially if you have a family. We need a living wage! The University has consistently disrespected our bargaining rights and our personal dignity throughout 3 years of bargaining for our first contract and now for over one year for our second contract. If we have very visible and vocal student support, the University will be forced to bargain with our unions in good faith! We thank you for being willing to learn first-hand about labor and the lives of workers--and most especially look forward to our combined efforts at labor actions on campus.
In Solidarity, Lisa Gustafson, President of CUE, the union for clericals at UCSC.

P.S. a small correction

The rally on september 5 was organized by University Labor United, not by Students for Labor Solidarity. However, SLS is also part of ULU.

It is very important that a loud and clear message is delivered demanding fair living wages be paid and all worker's rights be honnored. All organizations within the UC, including UCSC students, staff, and faculty, and people from the greater Santa Cruz community need to stand in solidarity around this issue.

Let's make some noise, have tons of fun, document it well, and spread the word far and wide.
