Dear UCSC and Tent University community,

UCSC's upper-administration claim to be opposed to Tent University because it’s a “health and safety? hazard. Last night, they ensured student safety by ordering cops dressed in riot gear to violently disperse our peaceful gathering, arresting 20 people.

Tent University is an alternative, experimental educational space designed to liberate our education from the top-down, oppressive UC system—a system that refuses to allow meainingful decision-making input from students; it denies campus workers a living wage, has caused student fees to increase 67 percent in three years, and allows millions of $$$ of military research to take place on campus, despite widespread student opposition.

Contrary to official claims, Tent University was not noisy at the time of arrests. The illegal activity that the administration was most worried about was our peaceable assembly during "non-free speech hours" at the base of campus.

By responding violently last night to students and community members’ desire to build a safe, peaceful, and communal space, UCSC’s upper-administration provided a visceral demonstration of the nature of this oppressive system. When students try to assert their power in a meaningful way (entirely peacefully), the administration knows only way to respond: through violence.

We refuse to be intimidated! On Monday night, the cops were ordered to leave by the administration (who fear losing their legitimacy): we won by meeting violence and repression with celebration and creativity!

During the day, join us at the base of campus for ongoing workshops, classes, music, dancing, art, and fun! At night, join us for a mass gathering to decide how to address our struggles with the police and administration. Resist, create, unite! Long live Tent U!

Re: (Tent U) Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony, 5 p.m.!

Why has the administration taken such a hard-line stance against Tent-U?

This is a seriously important question, try not to be blase in addressing it. As a bureaucratic organization they may merely be responding to a rather wild (peaceful as it may be) situation with the only repitoire or toolkit they have.

Remember that the State (UCSC is the state after all) is not the most creative institution. Institutions tend to be dense and rigid. Hold this in mind when you are confronted again, and ask yourselves in the meantime: why are they so adamently opposed to us?

Yes, you have provoked the powers that be to come down upon you with repression, but have you done so because you are now a legitimate threat to their legitimacy or goals? Or are they merely acting out a socially scripted situation: Students protest, create anarchic situation, authorities must repress, etc.

Reflect on this. Make sure you all don't fall into the scripted trap. Continually find ways not just to challenge the administration's legitimate authority, but to challenge the larger systems goals.

I think you're doing this, just wanted to state it in full.

Peace,
d
