Upcoming Tent University Santa Cruz Rally Friday
No Response Given thus Far on Student Demands

Santa Cruz, CA, May 11, 2005 – Many are trying to resume their normal schedules in the couple of weeks that have passed since the violent arrests of 19 students and community members at UC Santa Cruz. Last week, a group of involved students, members of the community, faculty, and administration sat down to talk about what happened on the night of April 18th. Chancellor Denise Denton apologized to those involved for the excessive "pain compliance" tactics used on peaceful demonstrators. The platform as a list of demands was also given to the administration.

The Tent U community believes that the police repression that night constitutes a violation of free speech and a glaring contradiction to the supposed educational mission of the UC system.

The upcoming rally on Friday the 13th was given to the Chancellor as an opportunity to respond to the demands on the Tent U platform, which include banning the use of pain compliance measures on peaceful student protesters, a democratic forum for student's concerns with the administration, reinstatement of the journalism department as well as the allocation of hard funds for humanities, and free speech 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A full list of demands is posted at ucsc.tentstate.com. The rally will also honor Pat True, UCSC worker and member of the local clerical union (CUE) who went on a hunger strike to demand information be released on who ordered the excessive force on the 18th.

Tent University coincided with several parallel student, community, and worker protests in the recent weeks. Wednesday of that week saw a statewide walkout against continuing educational fee hikes and holding back Proposition 98 funds for K-12. The April 20 day of action was called by Action In Defense of Education (AIDE), a statewide coalition of students from Community Colleges, Cal State, and University of California. The week before was marked by the CUE/AFSCME general strike of clerical and allied service workers that practically shut down UCSC. Tent University Santa Cruz is proud to be part of a nation-wide movement to point out the misplaced priorities of our educational institutions and is looking forward to working in solidarity with all other groups fighting for change in this area.

The rally will be held at the Baytree plaza at 1pm, during normal free speech hours. Chancellor Denton was invited but has not yet RSVP'd.

You do not "demand" things. You ask. If you don't want pain compliance, then do what you're told by the police. "Peaceful" protesters? Yeah, right. Vandalism, destruction of property, etc is not "peaceful". And if you dont' like UCSC, then go elsewhere. There are plenty of well qualified people who would love to take your place. Perhaps you should take your "demands" to the unemployment office.

""Peaceful" protesters? Yeah, right. Vandalism, destruction of property, etc is not "peaceful""

This is dis-info and should be ignored.

Can Someone Post the University's Written Respone?

At the Tent U support rally Friday afternoon, Tent U activists read aloud from two blue-colored pages, the administration's written response to Tent U demands. Can someone post this document? Thanks.

Nice rally. Keep it up!

Ther has to be Zero Tolerance to Police Abuse of all Students

Do what your told or i will hurt you ?
Is that it thom ?

why did they "have to obey" the cops or they would be hurt?

Was Hitler coming through?

“This is dis-info and should be ignored.?
It truly is insane that when another view point comes up here, it is seen as some kind of conspiracy. Ridiculous.

The University probably has not responded to the demands because they were illogical and foolish.

Re: Tent University Santa Cruz Rally Friday: No Response Given thus Far on Student Demands

red retard, there was no vandalism or property destruction on Monday, April 18, during TUSC. Your "point of view" is dis-information.

Can Anyone Post the Administration's Response to Tent U Demands?

Still wondering if any Tent U-ers could post the Administration's extremely lame response (a two-page letter it looked like) to the Tent U demands.

I'm also looking for the final Tent U document that includes both their platform and the other struggles they are in solidarity with. Anybody have this info?

Yeah, ignore the 27 tires that were slashed on UC vehicles that night. Yeah, ignore the 15+ windows that were broken out as well. But then again it's just dis-info so ignore it!

Re: Tent University Santa Cruz Rally Friday: No Response Given thus Far on Student Demands

Really big turn out for your rally. Lot's of solidarity going on there with all 25-30 of you. Overwhelming response and show of support. Who are your kidding?? Pack your tents and demands and head off to Rutgers. They'd love to see you there.

Re: Tent University Santa Cruz Rally Friday: No Response Given thus Far on Student Demands

grammar is cool.

I can certify as a TUSC organizer that we had absolutely nothing to do with the vandalism, if it was even done on Monday night. A Sentinel article conveniently mentioned vandalism that had occured sometime that week at the end of an article about TUSC, implying us to acts we had nothing to do with.

And not all of us can head off to some private college in another state. We have to go here because it is what we can afford (if you consider students loans I'll be paying for the next 20 years affordable). Because this is a public institution, paid for by my tuition and tax dollars, I think I ought to have some voice in it. 25-30 people isn't bad, this is only the begining.

If you'd like to see the TUSC docs, I suggest you check out the website or contact us through that; www.ucsc.tentstate.com

Still looking for the documents.

Actually, I counted 50-100 at the Friday rally when I was there (until about 2 PM).

Again, I'd be grateful (3rd request) if some TUSC member could post the full TUSC platform (including solidarity struggles) as well as the administration letter that was read at the Friday rally.

I've checked the TUSC website and don't see it.

Tent on!
