On the night of Thursday, May 19, the UCSC community 'Took Back the Night' from various forms of violence, especially violence against women.
This year's march had a different feel than in previous years due to the wheelchair friendly route, the inclusion of men, and the continued expansion of the definition of 'violence'.

After the speakers ended, students marched through Cowell, Stevenson, and eventually up 'Cardiac Hill' to Crown and Merrill Colleges.

To accomodate people in wheelchairs, the route was changed from the previous year. A different student (not pictured) spoke during the initial rally about the continued difficulties of being disabled.

Once the march reached College 9/10, students from UCSC's National Champion Slam Poetry Team performed about various feminist issues.

As it got darker, the march reached College 8.

...and finally making their way back up to College 8, where students ate food (provided by the organizers and Food Not Bombs) and listened to students give testemonials about their experiences with rape, assault, and other forms of violence.

Continuing a tradition that has lasted for decades, candles such as these brought issues of violence out of the dark.
