Aaron Glantz: How America Lost Iraq (6/16)

On Thursday, June 16th at 7:30 p.m., Aaron Glantz, an independent, unembedded reporter with Free Speech Radio News, will be at the Capitola Book Cafe to give a talk, and read from his new book, titled, "How America Lost Iraq." This is not the happy story of liberating Iraq and replacing dictatorship with democracy President Bush and the mainstream American media would have us believe.

Capitola Book Cafe is located at 1475 41st Avenue Capitola, CA 95010. Event starts at 7:30 p.m.

As a reporter for the staunchly antiwar Pacifica Radio, twenty-seven-year-old Aaron Glantz had spent much of early 2003 warning of catastrophe if the U.S. invaded Iraq. But, as he watched the statue of Saddam topple, he wondered whether he had been mistaken: In interviews with regular Iraqis, he found wide support for the Americans.

Then, in early 2004, the U.S. military initiated an unprovoked bombing campaign against Fallujah; the attack confounded many anti-Saddam Iraqis, and plunged the nation into chaos. Here is the brutally honest account of a reporter who discovered how popular the U.S. presence was in Iraq, and who then watched this popularity disappear as the Bush administration mishandled the war, leaving us with the intractable conflict we face today.

Aaron Glantz is a reporter for Pacifica Radio and other media outlets. He has visited Iraq three times during the U.S. occupation: for a month immediately after the fall of Saddam Hussein; from February to May 2004; and during the elections in January of 2005. His work from Iraq has also been syndicated to newspapers around the world by Inter Press News Service.

Aaron is a founding producer of Pacifica Radio’s national newscast, Free Speech Radio News. In the course of his work he has also reported from Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, South Korea, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, France, and Denmark.

Before becoming an international reporter, Aaron served as California State Capitol reporter for Pacifica’s flag-ship station, KPFA in Berkeley, CA, where he won the California Journalism Award for radio in 2000.

A native of San Francisco, he lives in Los Angeles with his fiancée, Ngoc Nguyen, and her family.

Re: Aaron Glantz: How America Lost Iraq (6/16)

I wonder if he would have written a book about how America lost WW2 early in 1944...

Apples and Oranges sucka!!!!

Comparing what the US did in WWII and what the US did in Iraq this most recent invasion is like comparing apples to oranges. The argument presented here, that the US's actions are being prematurely judged by the media really doesn't hold any water. The reality on the ground, as reported by someone who is actually there, is that we have lost any good will we might have once had by continuing this illegal occupation of a country that never once posed a threat to us so that Halliburton, Bectel, and all the other war profiteers, oil companies, and bomb makers can continue making record profits. This is a rich mans war and its the sons of poor men, on both sides of the conflict, who are paying the true price.

If I see that silver spoon slurping little daddy's boy in a flight suit again I'm gonna puke. Mission Acomplished? Then why are we still there?

"The reality on the ground, as reported by someone who is actually there, is that we have lost any good will we might have once had"

If Al-Qaeda had bombed the White House instead of the Pentagon, arrested or killed King George in the name of "regime change", and then occupied America with soldiers while it sold off stolen American assets to pay for Al Qaeda's expenses in maintaining that occupation, then we'd have an identical situation indeed. Except Republicans wouldnt call themselves "George loyalists", but "freedom fighters". Oh yeah and unlike the Iraqis, the American freedom fighters couldn't mount a decent rebellion thanks to decades of "gun control". See what happens when the general public owns explosives, rocket launchers, and machine guns? Nothing happens. Nothing until someone makes the mistake of invading a country with a well-armed populace. The Founding Fathers must be proud.. of Iraq!

The problem is that the U.S is a Democratic Republica that doesn't have a leader who's killed over 300,000 of its citizens over the decades he ruled...

Re: Aaron Glantz: How America Lost Iraq (6/16)

How many Iraqis have Americans killed now? With bullets, bombs, and by holding an entire nation under seige for 10 years, strangling it to death with "embargos" and "sanctions". How many children have died for lack of clean water, and because sewage runs openly in the streets since the US military for 10 years wouldn't let Iraqi engineers import repair parts? How many have died from malnutrition, because America has held an entire nation and people hostage while watching them starve?

Saddam deserves to die. So do his leiutenants. So do many Americans. All for the same crimes. And if this were a free country, I could name names. But I live in China, I mean America, so I can't even speak freely.

Anyway, Saddam gassed Kurds with American weaponry sold him by Reagan and Rummy. Pull your head out of the sand. Greg Palast has proven it all, and the BBC has published everything. The only country still ignorant of America's guilt is America. Did Saddam personally kill every victim? No, he had helpers do it for him. Saddam was just an accomplice to the real killers.

An accomplice the same as Reagan, Rumsfeld and countless other Americans. Most of whom are in the American military.
