AFSCME RECIEVES CONTRACT AFTER APRIL 14TH STRIKE!

After the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) struck on April 14th the UC was quick to make an offer the workers would accept. Thousands of service workers refused to work due to illegal bargaining practices on behalf of the University of California, among a wealth of other reasons, including a living wage and respect in the workplace.

Although the contract does not offer the UC’s low-wage workers everything they had hoped for, it does give them some solid gains and was well received by the rank and file. 87% of the union membership voted to approve the new contract, while those dissenting mostly thought they could do better if the fight went on. Overall, as evident through the ratification vote, the workers felt the contract was a significant step forward. It’s also good to hear that just because this contract has been approved there is still a segment of the union members dissatisfied with current working conditions and ready to continue to resist the UC’s corporate treatment of workers.

Members of both AFSCME’s rank and file as well as leadership felt that a predominant reason for the UC’s response and quick change of heart in offering service workers a contract (it was offered only five days after the strike) was due to the students’ support, and specifically that in Santa Cruz. When over 1,000 students joined workers on the picket line, taking over the street, and effectively shutting down their own school, it sent a clear message to UC’s administration. They were fucking scared. Students uniting with workers helped bring a bit of justice to the UC system. Congratulate yourselves at your good work, congratulate workers when you see them, and together we’ll FUCK THE REGENTS!
