"...unlawful and unconstitutional conditions of confinement to which Plaintiff has been subjected by Defendants at the Consolidated Naval Brig (“the Brig) in North Charleston, South Carolina, since President Bush designated him an “enemy combatant on June 23, 2003."
2 phone calls were allegedly made from Al-marri's phone to Mustafa Ahmed al-Hawsawi: the FBI is charged him with making a false statement that he didn't make the calls. There was also a laundry list of other charges.
Like Padilla, his was forced to fight a prolonged legal battle in two different venues. The original venue, in Illinois, was ruled incorrect after his transfer to the brig in South Carolina. The government had moved to dismiss all the charges against him, but they continue to hold him prisoner under inhumane conditions in solitary confinement in South Carolina.
The details of his saga can be read in chronological order in the original complaint. I've converted it to text for easy access at the following URL:

Al-marri was a returning student to Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois at the time of his arrest. he had a B.A. from there and returned with his family on September 10, 2001 to do graduate work. He is a citizen of Qatar, and the embassies of Qatar and Saudi Arabia have hired attorneys to represent him. collegefreedom.org has posted the story of Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri's background along with further details about his case.
