Muni Social Strike

On September 1, a social strike (or fare strike) begins to combat MUNI fare hikes, service cuts, and layoffs. Riders won't pay, and drivers won't collect.

The strike will last, and it will spread, until 3 demands are met: the fare is reduceed back to $1.25, all service cuts are reversed, and drivers who were laid off are rehired.

MUNI management is trying to raise money by targeting us: increasing our fares, laying off workers, and cutting service. They are counting on riders and workers to remain divided, silent, and passive.

But rather than being adversaries, transit workers and transit riders have a lot in common. We are working class people who rely on MUNI for transportation and jobs. We're tired of always paying more for less while the rich face no economic hardship. And we've heard enough excuses from city hall.

Its clear to us that if we don't fight back, the situation will just keep on getting worse. And we know that collective action can force the city to back down, to balance the budget on the backs of those who can actually afford it. We have seen how fare strikes have worked in similar situations before, in Chicago, Italy and Los Angeles.

So we are taking a stand, and our demands are non-negotiable. We can't afford their plan, and we won't pay for it.

Re: Muni Social Strike

How about balancing it on the backs of those who want it and use it, and leave the rest of us out of your latest gimme-gimme-gimme plan?

I have a motorcycle, which does me a lot more good than the crappy public transit system in Santa Cruz. Besides try being a woman on the bus around here. Have you ever seen all the creeps? I dont need to go come home from work every day afraid of what jerk is going to get off at my stop and follow me home.

Try public transit in Peru some time, and you will be grateful for what you have here in America. I don't make much by your standards, but I live better now than I ever did back home.

p.s. my brother owns a neighborhood sandwich shop, and he has a hard enough time paying us without you balancing your public transit costs on his back he says. I know you mean well but respect us please dont take from us what is not yours. We came here to get away from that.

It's on! From September 1 onward, MUNI riders and drivers are engaging in a social strike. Riders won't pay, and drivers won't collect, until ALL fare hikes, service cuts, and layoffs are reversed.

The will last, and it will grow as long as it lasts, until our demands are met: the fare is reduceed back to $1.25, all service cuts are reversed, and drivers who were laid off are rehired.
