Sunshine Villa is getting pressured by its workforce to comply with the law and bargain fairly with their union. In response, the state issued a citation for inadequate staffing.

The Union charges that four workers have been improperly fired by Sunshine Villa in retaliation: two complained to the state about the short staffing, one announced she was on workers compensation, and another -- an eleven year employee with a good record -- returned to work on her own time to complete duties that she had been unable to finish because of the short staffing. Workers will bring their case to the Board of Supervisors on September 13th at 9:00 AM.

On August 31st, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) nailed the owners of Sunshine Villa, a Santa Cruz Assisted Living Facility with a second citation for unfair labor practices. The NLRB agreed with workers charges, brought through their union, SEIU 415. Sunshine Villa is cited for: imposing an “English language Only? Policy against its workers; interrogating workers about their union loyalties, and unilaterally changing job duties and eligibility requirements.

Sunshine Villa already faces the NLRB in the federal appeals court for stonewalling on negotiations for a union contract, when 80% of Sunshine Villa workers voted to join SEIU Local 415.

Back in July, state officials cited Sunshine Villa for short staffing after it was discovered that at times the Agency had scheduled as few as two staff to meet the needs of approximately 75 residents. This is not the first time Sunshine Villa has been cited in Santa Cruz and elsewhere.
