Metro Rally Turns Out Well Oct 7, 2005
On Friday Oct 7, 2005 from 4PM-6:30PM the workers and students marched from the base of the UCSC Campus to the Metro Center and then to the Sentinel.
There was a good turnout for this march and rally. About 200 people showed up. There were reports afterward that one counter-demonstrator tore up someone's sign in front of newspaper and TV cameras. But I didn't see any of that. After a brief rally at the Metro Center, the march proceeded to the Sentinel building. I believe it was the Editor, Tom Honig, who came outside to talk to the protesters. The protesters lambasted the Sentinel's one sided coverage of the strike and Tom Honig said he would do his best to improve coverage. Afterward, people filtered back to the Metro Center to catch rides back up to campus. That part of the protest was organized very well apparently, since by the time I drove my car over there to offer people a ride, all of the potential riders had left already. How are students handling the commute during the week? Are carpools being organized? One possible solution is to call 831-429-pool (429-7665) or visit
www.commutesolutions.org to find (a) carpool partner(s). Are people being allowed to park out of marked spaces alongside roadways on campus as implied by one of Bradley's pictures?

Re: Metro Rally Turns Out Well Oct 7, 2005
Most students are carpooling or hitching rides. I do see a lot of people trying to walk up to campus. I know a couple of students are picking up students they see that need rides for a couple of hours after their own classes.
Also, the campus is allowing people to mark in spaces alongside the road, but this is designated unmarked spots if that makes sense.
