The Human Rights Organization is glad to announce the planning for the November 19th event is on track and interest is strong. The focus of the event is in the title, Activism, Politics, and Homelessness. The venue is going to be the Louden Nelson Community Center, Rm. 3 which has the kitchen. It will last from 3:30pm to 6:00pm. The event starts with free food and music. Carol Moon is to cook vegan style and buy most of the produce at the Homeless Garden. We have the kitchen from 2:30pm until 4:30pm. The serving will start at 3:30 when room 3 will be opened to the public. Food Not Bombs is interested in helping in the kitchen and any food remaining unused will go to them for the feed at San Lorenzo Park on Sunday. We are hoping that the musicians from the SAFE events will play at open mike during the time food is served until 4:pm. Jack and Jay, two well known local musicians, will play acoustic guitar with a hint of social protest. Speakers will start at around 4:30. Local civil rights attorney Kate Wells will speak on the current status of the Santa Cruz downtown ordinances and possible legal strategies. Linda Lamaster of Housing Now will talk about how the housing crisis affects homelessness. The event is meant to be both broad enough and specific enough to appeal to those who understand that their immediate quality of life depends on issues here at home, Santa Cruz. We want to open up some critical space to confront these tough issues. Something we don’t get from our city leadership. Here are just a few key topics for this event; civic engagement, homeless rights, economic and social apartheid, local political, civil, and legal action. We are looking for individuals and groups to become involved at this time. We need help from volunteers at both ends of the event and in the kitchen. We can offer table space for groups and we are putting together a short speakers list. Anyone with suggestions or needs information please contact us. We meet each Sat 1:45pm to 2:45pm at 115 Coral St in the dinning hall. Phone (831)425-4467, e-mail: hrosc061 (at) hotmail.com. Bob Patton, member HRO.
