Winning the Vote - Triumph of the American Women Suffrage Movement Thursday Dec 1, 6:30pm

WINNING THE VOTE – Triumph of the American Woman Suffrage Movement, a photo & word documentary book by Santa Cruz historian Robert P. J. Cooney, Jr., will be premiered and honored by eight local women’s and community groups on Thursday Dec. 1st, 6:30pm at the First Congregational Church fellowship hall, 900 High St., Santa Cruz. Cynthia Mathews, Santa Cruz City Mayor, sister Sara Wood Smith and their father Kirk Smith are related to Sara Bard Field a prominent woman suffragist featured in the book.
Authored in collaboration with the National Women’s History Project during the 85th anniversary of women winning the right to vote in the United States, the magnificently illustrated oversized 960 photograph 496 page documentary is, at publication, a standard reference on the subject.

Filmmaker Ken Burns calls the book, “a wonderful chronicle of the untold history of our country – the story of the brave remarkable women who change our nation.?

“Never again,? declares the book jacket introduction, “can the claim be made that American women were given the vote. Women fought, sacrificed, and suffered for that cause. Women won the vote, and this book reveals, for the first time, what it cost them and exactly what it took to prevail.?

Cooney, author of the equally compelling photo and word documentary, The Power of the People: Active Nonviolence in the United States, will discuss and illustrate book highlight with a slide show. A book signing will conclude the evening.

The event is sponsored by the Resource Center for Nonviolence (RCNV), and co-sponsored by the World and Community Team of First Congregational Church, Planned Parenthood, the League of Women Voters, the Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF), The Walnut Avenue Women’s Center, Women’s Crisis Support~Defensa de Mujeres, The UCSC Women’s Center and the Santa Cruz County Women’s Commission.

Propaganda of Yesteryear
Here is a sample of the public ridiculde these women were faced with. This cartoon that ran in Life magazine depicts American suffragists "as they are", how "they think they are" and as "they appear to police and shopkeepers."

The heading for the cartoon is "militants."

It's nearly 100 hundred years later and many gains have been won. Still, not that much has changed.

How typical. I wonder how a woman cartoonist would portray the men who run rape camps, batter women and molest children?
