Rockin' the Boat: De-Nuke the UC

On Wed. 11/30, University students in California, Colorado and New Mexico, took part in a day of action to call for nuclear abolition, demilitarization, and an end to their schools' involvement in nuclear weapons research and development. A noon rally at UCSC drew about 50 people, and dozens of curious onlookers. The students held a mock wedding ceremony, symbolizing the 'marriage' of the UC with the Bechtel.

The nation's nuclear weapons research labs, Los Alamos in New Mexico and Lawrence Livermore in California, have been been exclusively by The University of California. The combined annual worth of the two Dept of Energy contracts is around 4 billion dollars. Management failings at Los Alamos prompted the Dept of Energy to open up the contract for bidding for the first time since 1943. The University of California partnered with the Bechtel Corporation and re-bid for the contract, while The University of Texas, and a consortium of 33 other colleges, paired up with Lockheed Martin and also placed a bid. Within days, the Dept of Energy is expected to announce which of these alliances will be awarded a minimum seven-year contract to run Los Alamos nuclear weapons laboratory.
