Register to Vote Until Midnight Monday

If you havenít had a chance to register to vote in the November 5, 2002 General Election, you can do so until midnight on Monday, October 7, at the County Government Center in Santa Cruz.

In South County, election officials will be at Ramsay Park, 1301 Main Street in Watsonville, from 4 to 8 p.m. registering voters. Bilingual volunteers will be available to assist those registering.

Voters are encouraged to register to vote by Monday in order to ensure that they will be on the voter rolls and be mailed voter information materials.

The final deadline to register to vote in the November 5, 2002 election is Monday, October 21. Late registrants will be mailed a postcard advising them where to go and vote on election day and may have to vote provisionally if there is insufficient time to add them to the voter rolls.

Voters may register at the Elections Department in Room 210 of the County Government Center, located at 701 Ocean St., in Santa Cruz from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., the election officials will move to the court trailer, Department 8, in front of the Government Center and be available to register voters until the clock strikes midnight.

To be eligible to register and vote, a person must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old on or before November 5, and not be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction.

Voters should re-register if they do not remember voting within the last five years, have moved since last voting, want to change their political party affiliation, or have changed their name.

Persons interested in re-registering or registering for the first time in Santa Cruz County may also obtain voter registration cards at county offices, the Department of Motor Vehicles, social service agencies, military recruitment offices, local libraries, post offices, city halls, and university colleges.
