Teachers unite against war

<santa-cruz.com/archive/2002/December/22/edit/let.htm>

The following short letter was signed by 52 teachers and administrators at Aptos High School. The letter does not reflect the opinion of every teacher or administrator there, nor is it a statement of official opinion or policy of the school or the district.
As teachers, we are acutely aware of the problems faced by young people. Too often, violence is portrayed to young adults as the reactive trigger to complex questions. Rather than deal with the causes of strife, some leaders of government and industry are pushing our country to a disastrous proposition: that we must act unilaterally with a pre-emptive strike against Iraq. War is an easy answer, but is it the right one? Mahatma Gandhi wrote: If we are to reach real peace in this world, and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with the children. As teachers, we cannot be silent on a possible war with Iraq. We stand together with many religious leaders, Nobel Prize winners and with a vocal majority from around the world, as men and women against a war against Iraq. A war against Iraq will create needless death, environmental destruction and the further erosion of the human spirit.
