INTRODUCTION - To young people considering military service, and the people who love them:
For over 30 years members of the RCNV staff have worked with young people who are making their decision about the draft (Selective Service), enlisting in the military or applying for conscientious objector status. About two things we are certain:
1) If you choose to enlist in ROTC, the Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP) or the military, then GET INFORMED!
You can CHANGE YOUR MIND. But once you're actually serving in the military it's very difficult to make changes, to protest harassment or to leave. Carefully read the entire military contract before you sign it; you'll find a clause(s) that allows the military to change your assignment, pay, and benefits any time they want without notice to you! Is this what you want for eight (8) years!?
In the military you are no longer a civilian living under civilian law. The moment you enlist you are subject to military objectives, policy, discipline, law, courts and imprisonment – very strict, very harsh. In-service resistance is very difficult and lonely.
2) If you want be a conscientious objector (CO) to military service START PREPARING NOW! The absence of a formal draft is a TRAP.
Enactment of a draft will only happen in a crisis. During a crisis there is enormous government and social pressure to enlist. The time provided for CO applications will be very short. The application process will be difficult. Today, without a formal Draft process, there is no way to know what alternatives will be available for COs. It's always a hassle to collect documentation for a CO application and likely draft board hearing.
Preparing and documenting a CO application will be difficult in a military crisis; it's worse when a person is in the military and doesn't want to be there. It's a lot easier to start collecting documentation of one's beliefs and actions early. Friends, teachers and family can help. You can start now.
You will have questions as you review the material available on this web page. Make notes. No matter what your decision or direction, RCNV staff will provide confidential phone or personal up-to-date counseling regarding your questions or plans.

Comments
the draft is a red herring
The American military machine today is not only unstoppable, but virtually untouchable. Far more soldiers died from accidents and friendly fire in the last 2 invasions (Iraq and Afghanistan), than from enemy fire.
I know that the draft talk was started by a Democratic congressman, but the White House WANTS us to worry about this silly ghost of a threat as just another thing to divert attention from the real issues.
Washington, using money they took from us, is about to invade a comparably helpless sovereign nation under a total pretense (AGAIN!).
Iraq is violating UN orders? The US violates UN orders all the time! Hell, many UN orders are a violation of national sovereignty and SHOULD be ignored anyway.
Iraq *may* have weapons of mass destruction? Washington is ARMED TO THE TEETH with them, and has them deployed all over the freaking planet, AND HAS USED THEM!
Iraq?! Iraq is nothing militarily. Sure, they invaded Kuwait.. because Iraq caught Kuwait cross-drilling into Iraqi oil fields and stealing oil! And even then only after Iraq asked America what it would do, and our own State Dept told them "We take no position on disputes between Arabic nations." i.e. go for it, we won't stop you. AND THEN THEY DID! WTF?
And what about all that talk of "using violence to achieve a political goal is terrorism"? HELLO, what do you think "regime change" is? By its own definition, the coming US invasion of Iraq is terrorism.
Washington is executing a global crime spree right now, and every crime it commits is in part to divert attention from the fallout and aftermath of the last crime they committed.
Is anyone talking about the 3,000 Afghan civilians who were killed by Washington's military? We kept hearing about the 3,000 New Yorkers, but when Washington does it to someone (someone who wasn't even involved!) - again with the double standards!
Yeah yeah, "harboring terrorists". No trial, no evidence shown, just empty accusations, a media machine complicit in whipping up war hysteria, and decimation of a HELPLESS 3rd world country.
Does this mean that when the CIA's terrorist agents come back to hide in the safety of America after orchestrating death and destruction in, say, Columbia, that Columbia is now justified in bombing the USA for "harboring terrorists"? And they dont even have to show evidence?
There's just no reasoning with madmen, is there. Even when those madmen are the American civilian population.
No no, don't think about any of this. Those are all issues where OTHER people get hurt. Here, let's make you feel personally threatened with nonsense about another draft, so you'll forget all about what Washington is doing around the globe.. in our name.. with our money.. inviting further retalliation against us... you know, retalliation like 9/11.
Hussein is evil, but at least he's harmless compared to Bush's evil. And through taxation we're all being used as slave labor to fuel Bush's war machine.
Except of course for King George's willing supporters. Soulless backstabbing sellout minions of the king, that lot.
Who, granted, are no better than Clinton's willing supporters during the bombing of Kosovo. The hands of most Americans, Republican and Democrat, are blood stained.
But I digress.
