Walking for Peace from Clock to Lighthouse (3/29/03)

Today's march and rally was fun, good excersie, polite to people in our city, and a solid demonstration that there is a significant amount of people around Santa Cruz and throughout the world that are saying No to the Big War Machine.

On Saturday, March 29, a Family Outing with a Cause was organized to demonstrate our continued opposition to War in Iraq.

People assembled at the town clock at 1:00pm and then marched down Pacific Ave.

Marchers went up beach hill before having a rally organized by the Santa Cruz Peace Coalition and Barrios Unidos at Raymond Street Park in the Beach Flats.

Folk Goddess Diane Patterson brought the energy up a few notches by leading the crowd in chanting "Freedom..." and playing accoustic guitar.

We also heard from a grandpa who's grandson has been forced to fight in Iraq even after serving the time he signed up for 6 years ago.

An organizer with the United Farm Workers discussed significance of Caeser Chavez and tomorrows's demonstration in Salinas.

After the family picnic and speakers in the park, people again took to the streets to demand peace, NOW.

We walked along the beach and past the boardwalk eventually ending up at the lighthouse on West Cliff Dr.

Today's march and rally was fun, good excersie, polite to people in our city, and a solid demonstration that there is a significant amount of people around Santa Cruz and throughout the world that are saying No to the Big War Machine.

Another demonstration similar to today's is in the planning stages according to a women speaking into a megaphone at the lighthouse.

Looks to me like people were trying to figure out what they wanted to do.

Perhaps they were waiting for the marchers in the back to catch up, as was the case throughout the march.

Basta Ya!

Bring your bikes, strollers, roller skates, unicycles, and other methods of rolling transportation that do not require the continued comsumption of fossil fuels to the next demonstration in your town.

Pacific and Laurel

In line with the going police tactic these days,

the police decided to block pacific and laurel

before the demonstrators

did it themselves.
