Australian Eco Trekker reception in Santa Cruz
Meet Shaun Murphy, intrepid "Eco Trekker" who set out in Australia to prove that we can be eminently mobile without being eco-criminals. Now he's landed in the States to do the same thing here. Along the road he will don a Santa Cruz conceived Bonny Doon-made "ONLY THE BRAVE" hemp kilt(!), to promote and celebrate the emerging carbohydrate economy.
THE ECO TREKKER comes to Santa Cruz
'Meet The Crew' reception at Santa Cruz Compassion Flower Inn

THE ECO TREKKER
A New Breed of Cousteau…A Green-Powered Mad Max.
Look out America…everything ‘Eco’ can be a blast! And, Shaun Murphy from the Land Down Under is here to tell us how easy and entertaining eco-living can be. He will begin his 8-month trek through 30 states beginning July 15 from San Francisco, accompanied by his best friend Sparky, the electric dog. Viewers will be able to follow the Eco Trekker via his website and the public will be able to hitch a ride with this green-powered Mad Max through a national contest.
Shaun blends his original, vibrant style of enviro-discovery with green energy adventure. He will be traveling the U.S. in eco-mobiles; solar canoes, electric motorcycles and a wild collection of eco-vehicles that use wind power, solar energy, geothermal electricity, mini-hydro power, bio-fuels and any other renewable energy the American people can help him with. It promises to be ‘crackerjack’ Aussie adventure!
The challenges are interspersed with stories of Americans the Eco-Trekker runs into on his adventures…traveling through the South on sugarcane that he’ll first have to harvest……. How about Cow dung and chicken manure to provide the fuel for his poo-powered Eco-mobile across Minnesota and Wisconsin…Through Iowa, he’s on a mission to fuel his "Bio-Bug" car on leftover soybean veggie oil…He’ll travel across Kentucky and Tennessee on hemp oil …Landfill methane will get him through Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania…and the adventures continue through 21 more states…
Shaun Murphy, the Eco-Trekker, began his career as a TV reporter on Channel 10, with Australia’s wildlife and environment series "Totally Wild" (Discovery Channel International) as well as hosting "Totally Wild Rescue". He entertained Australians for years as a regular guest on Channel 10’s "Good Morning Australia" before moving over to Channel 9’s "Mornings with Kerri-Anne". In between his television and radio commitments he paddled a kayak 600 miles down the east coast of Australia in a wild race against time to celebrate the Year of the Ocean and make a television show for National Geographic Channel.
Last year, Shaun traveled over 800 miles from the New South Wales outback (site of the world’s first solar power station) to Sydney Harbor in a fleet of eco-mobiles. Along the way, he encountered a host of eco-friendly initiatives from bio-diesel made from sunflowers that reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80% to tree-less paper made from sugarcane.
The Eco Trekker notes that over the past seven years in Australia, the organic food industry has grown by 300%, renewable energy use in Australian homes has powered ahead by 500% and the first biodiesel fuel pumps are flowing from Australian feedstocks. All in all, environmental sustainability has become entrenched in some of Australia’s biggest companies and eco-education is an integral part of every Australian’s primary and secondary education.
