Unconstitutional Police State Checkpoint Fri June27

The 4th amendment against warrantless searches will again be trampled by the SCPD as they conduct another unconstitutional random search of cars at the intersection of Ocean & Water next Friday June 27th 9p-2am.
The 4th amendment against warrantless searches will again be trampled by the SCPD as they conduct another unconstitutional random search of cars at the intersection of Ocean & Water next Friday June 27th 9p-2am.

They claim that members of the press are welcome. What their press release won't tell you is that members of the public who show up to do the job that the press refuses - shining a spotlight on the illegal nature of these checkpoints and on the OTHER activity that goes on there - are harrassed by the SCPD into leaving. This includes their making frivilous threats of arrest for tresspassing (simply for standing in the same bank parking lot as the cops, despite it being open 24-hour for public ATM access.)

These checkpoints are not about protecting the safety of the rest of us. They are about random searches of the cars of innocent people, random searches of the drivers AND PASSENGERS, and random inspection of your government documents (license, car tax registration, insurance, warrants for unpaid speeding and parking tickets).

It's about tax collection and control, and conditioning us to accept Ashcroft's stated intention to further reduce our Constitutional rights and our freedom as Americans to go about our business unmolested.

Don't believe it? Come watch it for yourself. Everytime a car's passenger is interrogated on the street (they don't include these in the final count of "stops"!), ask yourself what this has to do with DUI.

Every time a driver is interrogated on the street (again, they dont count these as "stops"), ask yourself whatever happened to innocent-until-proven-guilty. Ask yourself why the 4th amendment expressely forbids "warrantless search and seizure", and when the Constitution became irrelevant.

Or don't ask. Maybe your life will be easier that way.

SCPD Bullies

Van, you got video? SCPD goes beyond the letter of the law into a realm understood (or imagined) only by themselves. People who study the police for a living (gag!) say that they function as a CULT. So you are dealing with heavily armed cult members who have their own rules and codes.

Why not get people to make signs and hold them up on each of the approaches a few blocks away? Interviews with the victims?

Most people don't know that once you've supplied your name, id, and address YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER THEIR QUESTIONS. Ask: Am I being detained? Am I being arrested? If they say no, tell them you are leaving. You are not there to chat. I have demanded they either cite me or arrest me or get the hell out of my face (after being pulled over 13 times by various cops FOR RIDING A MOPED.) Are there any attorneys in Santa Cruz taking Civil Rights cases?

Re: Unconstitutional Police State Checkpoint Fri June27

Did you know that you can get a pdf of a poster that summarizes your rights in stops and searches at www.nlg.org/resources/know_your_rights.htm ?

Did you know that you can get a great 14-minute mp3 audio version of the above poster, narrated by Peter Coyote at portland.indymedia.org/media/media/2002/08/217632.mp3 (use portland.indymedia.org/en/2002/08/17632.shtml and save the target of the loudspeaker icon to your computer if the previous link doesn't result in immediate playback)?

Might you want to be blasting that program out of your car stereo as you park near or drive by these DUI checkpoints? "Oh that, officer? Aren't you hip to street music, officer? Haven't you heard the 'rights rap' yet, officer? What, it doesn't sound like music to you officer? Now why would it sound like music to my ears then, officer?"
