Peace Talk in Monterey

"As somebody living in the US, it’s my responsibility to speak out against injustices done in my name, all over the world, and act in solidarity with people all over the Americas..."
When Bradley Allen traveled to Miami last November to protest at a conference on the Free Trade Area of the Americas (Pres. Bush’s proposed NAFTA-expansion), he got shot in the leg with a plastic bullet while he was demonstrating. But he still says, “I experienced the ultimate beauty of our species.?

“I saw people taking time out of their lives to demonstrate, people willing to share food and come together,? he says.

And then, there’s the ugliness. “The police were very violent,? he says.

On Monday, Feb. 9, Allen will come to Monterey to tell his stories. Allen, along with several other members of the Independent Media Center in Santa Cruz, will show photos and describe their experiences marching on Miami in November 2003, and protesting against the WTO ministerial conference in Cancun, Mexico, last September.

The event, hosted by the Peace Coalition of Monterey County, begins at 6pm with a potluck at the Monterey Senior Center, 280 Dickman Ave.

The presentation starts at 7pm, and will include two documentary films, Miami 2003: Your Tax Dollars At Work, and Down, Down WTO.

“As somebody living in the US, it’s my responsibility to speak out against injustices done in my name, all over the world, and act in solidarity with people all over the Americas who don’t have the opportunity to protest in Miami or speak out at all,? Allen says. [JL]
