Re: Rockin' the Boat: Safeway Pickets Continue in Santa Cruz!

Thanks for the reports V-man.

Unfortunately we are dealing with three parent companies that are working together in various ways, including sharing profits, to defeat this strike. Instead of the call to boycott Safeway we need to raise the call: Boycott Vons/Safeway, Albertson's, and Ralph's/Krogers! This along side calls for more effective action than boycotts.

Recent other postings on Indymedia would have us think that the Safeway management are the good guys. The only difference between Walmart and Safeway as employers is that the workers at Safeway have won union contracts that have bettered their situations. Today Safeway management is on the attack to ruin the workers whose labor keeps them employed.

What we are dealing with is a company that needs to be shut down everywhere. Allowing Safeway to continue to make profits in other parts of the country, including here, is part of the failure of the strategy of the UFCW leadership. All union work for the company should cease to save the jobs and healthcare of the southern California workers, thereby securing a more stable future for the workers everywhere.

Another part of this failure of the UFCW leadership's strategy is boycotting only one store when three companies are working together to break this strike.

Rank and file workers should demand the union misleadership join them in shutting down Vons/Safeway, Albertson's, Ralph's/Krogers!

Steve Argue - So what are those workers paying right now for health benefits? What are their current payscales? What percentage of their wages are they paying for health care coverage vs what they will be paying under their employers proposed contracts? What do you propose workers pay for health insurance?

Re: Rockin' the Boat: Safeway Pickets Continue in Santa Cruz!

I call for:

1. Nationalized healthcare designed to meet the needs of all irregardless of income. This will be funded through taxes or through a broader socialized economy and made much more efficient (i.e. less expensive) through the abolition of the insurance industry and other parasitic profit in health care.

2. I support as an intermediate partial solution the proposal of single payer healthcare that would cover all and reduce costs by eliminating the insurance industry.

3. I propose that unions take a stronger stand in extracting healthcare benefits from directly from employers as well as fighting for single payer and national healthcare.

By the way, workers, whose labor creates the profits of corporations like Safeway, are paying for their own health insurance when they force their employers to cover them.
