Explanation of County Central Committee candidates:

Michael and Maureen Smith have sent out a mailing to all registered Peace and Freedom Party voters. They received it on March 1st. The mailing urges people to vote against Steve Argue. The mailing claims that Steve Argue does not represent the Peace and Freedom Party and claims that he has misrepresented himself by saying that he does. However, a look at the latest issue of the Partisan, the official newspaper of the Peace and Freedom Party, features an article by Argue entitled “PROTEST HITS SCHWARZENEGGER’S PROPOSED CUTS TO THE ELDERLY AND SISABLED.? That article is ended with the following inserted by the editors of the paper, “Steve Argue is a member of the Executive Board of SEIU Local 415 and is a member of the Peace and Freedom Party state central committee?.

So who is lying? The editors of the Partisan are well aware of who has been active with the Peace and Freedom Party, and who has come out of the woodwork since we regained ballot status.

As local chairs of the Peace and Freedom Party, Michael and Maureen Smith have subverted all democracy by refusing to hold local meetings and by making decisions by straw polls that exclude State Central Committee members Jennifer Gosk and Steve Argue.

Behind this lack of Democracy is Michael and Maureen Smith’s deep-seated support for all of the Democrats in the local City Council. This went as deep as Mike Smith’s recent support to the police for Steve Argue’s arrest for having a political table up for more than an hour.

The timing of Michael and Maureen Smiths mailing ensures that a response to the Smiths cannot be mailed to Santa Cruz County Peace and Freedom Party members before the March 2 vote. Yet with your votes, and the votes of others who know Steve Argue’s true record, we can stop the Santa Cruz Peace and Freedom Party from becoming a lesser auxiliary of the City Council and police.

What about F?

Thanks for publishing this info / suggestions.

I'm curious if Liberation News has a position on Measure F.

Here's a bit more info on it from SC-IMC

Re: PEACE AND FREEDOM in the March 2nd PRIMARY

Bradley,

I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on this question before the election, but there was little time.

Liberation News didn't put out a position on F because it was a mixed bag. On the one hand it is a regressive tax that is unfair to working class people, and will also free up money for the wrong-headed priorities of the local government. On the other hand it is ensuring that a needed social service gets funded.

Liberation News would have done things very differently than what was put forward with the measure, but given the choices presented, we did not want to actively oppose the measure either.

Sincerely, Steve Argue for Liberation News
