As they do every year, the United Farm Workers Union is throwing a big birthday party to celebrate the life and memory of Cesar Chavez.

On March 23, 2004, our Local 415 Executive Board endorsed this Cesar Chavez Day March and Celebration and encouraged members to attend.

The themes for this year's event are:
- organizing for a new immigration law
- supporting hundreds of D'Arrigo farm workers fighting for contract
- promoting no violence in communities
- healthcare for all

The event will be held Sunday, March 28, 10am - 4pm, at Cesar Chavez Park, 250 N. Madiera St., Salinas. Musical entertainment will be offered by
Montes de Durango, Patrulla 81, Grupo Razado and Tamboraso Campesino. Participants will March through the streets of Salinas, returning to
Chavez Park.

Cesar Estrada Chavez (March 31, 1927 - April 23, 1993) founded the National Farm Workers Association, which became the United Farm Workers. He was an American labor rights hero for supporting labor rights for Mexican migrant
farm workers and successfully leading a uccessful consumer boycott against grapes producers. Chavez was a fervent proponent of nonviolence.

Chavez is celebrated in California where the state legislature, in 2000, approved a bill to create a paid state holiday in his honor. The
holiday is celebrated on March 31st, Chavez' birthday. The holiday is the first in the history of the United States for a Mexican American and a labor leader.
