Become a Regional Organizer for Cal GE-Free

Become a Regional Organizer with Californians for GE-Free Agriculture by
attending a five-day training session August 2-6, 2004 in beautiful Sonoma County.
WE WANT YOU! TO HELP KEEP CALIFORNIA FREE OF GENETICALLY ENGINEERED (GE) CROPS

AUGUST 2-6, 2004

On March 2nd 2004, Mendocino County residents passed a measure banning the planting
of GE crops-- the first of its kind in the U.S. There are now 10 other counties
throughout the state working to enact similar bans.

Californians for GE-Free Agriculture is a coalition of sustainable farming,
environmental and consumer organizations working to keep all of California free of
GE crops. We need your support to help make this happen.

BECOME A REGIONAL ORGANIZER IN YOUR COMMUNITY!

HOW? Become a Regional Organizer with Californians for GE-Free Agriculture by
attending a five-day training session August 2-6, 2004 in beautiful Sonoma County.

WHY DO WE OPPOSE NEW GE CROP PLANTINGS IN CALIFORNIA? California farms produce over
350 varieties of crops and export more food than any other U.S. state; we are also
the world leader in organic food production and sustainable agriculture. This
vitality is threatened as biotechnology companies like Monsanto, Syngenta, Ventria
Biosciences and Bayer attempt to spread GE crops and seeds across California's
farms.Millions of people in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe are actively
opposing and successfully stopping the spread of GE crops worldwide. Ending GE in
California is vital in the global struggle against this harmful technology.

WHAT CAN YOU LOOK FORWARD TO DURING THE TRAINING RETREAT?

The Occidental Arts and Ecology Center (www.oaec.org) will host this five-day
learning and skills-building retreat. The Center is located about 60 miles north of
San Francisco on 80 acres of beautiful organic gardens, ponds and wilderness. You
will enjoy wholesome, seasonal, delicious vegetarian meals with organic vegetables
and fruits from the gardens and local farms. You will stay in tents in a beautiful
meadow or in one of our yurt dormitories. You will also be welcome to relax in the
hot tub, wood-fired cedar sauna, swim in the pond, or take walks through woods,
grasslands and chapparel.

If accepted, we will pay for all your accommodations, meals and materials. Limited
travel stipends will be available if needed.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT AT THE TRAINING?

Issue briefings on a variety of topics including: state, national and international
updates, patents and farmers' rights, regulatory and legal issues, and global
resistance to GE. Skills development workshops on: media outreach, community mapping
and power analysis, campaign development, tactics and messages, meeting with
decision makers, farmer outreach, organizing and facilitating participatory
meetings, democratic decision making methods and local fundraising. In addition to
the daily workshops, there will be ample time to go on nature walks and take time to
smell the flowers.

PLEASE APPLY TODAY:
We are looking for people who can actively participate in the Cal GE-Free network as
a regional organizer for one year and commit 20 hours per month, have a strong
commitment to sustainable agriculture, good communication skills, and are willing to
work on both local campaigns and collaborative statewide efforts.

We will give priority to groups of 2-4 people who live in the same region and will
be attending the training together. After attending the training we are asking
participants to commit to establishing and becoming core members of a local food
democracy group.

You will leave the training with essential community organizing, campaign planning,
