Reclaimin' the Commons: June 3 - 9 in San Francisco

A mass mobilization is afoot from June 3-9 in San Francisco to oppose the hostile corporate takeover of the necessities of life, and to demonstrate the solutions to corporate power that already exist. I’m forwarding this because it’s very much a grassroots effort, and we are what makes up those grassroots…

The biotechnology industry will be meeting in San Francisco from June 6-9th, to "celebrate the benefits of biotech to health, agriculture, the economy and the environment." BIO 2004 will be met with an alternative gathering called Reclaim the Commons, from June 3-9th. Although BIO's website claims that the Bay Area "is the world's leading bioscience corridor," the Bay Area is also renowned for its recent resistance against global capitalism, protests against destruction of the environment, and the US war on Iraq.

Reclaim the Commons consists of a number of working groups that focus on greening the Bay Area, messaging, a welcome center, and the planning of various actions. Read a list of events - and add your own event(s) - on the Reclaim the Commons Calendar.

The mobilization is “Reclaim the Commons? -- the commons being defined as those things that the people of this planet once held in common, but which are being privatized by corporations and their politicians at an ever-increasing pace: our genes, our food, health care and education systems, public spaces, our air waves, the forests, oceans and all other ecosystems and our government itself.

Please go to reclaimthecommons.net or call 877.806.2871 for much more information.

The people working on this mobilization are doing wonderful work, and they can use your help in getting out the message that the commons should be
held in public trust, not for private gain.

About the 6/6 Really, Really Free Market

The market will be a demonstration of the "gift economy" in the midst of the Conspicuous Consumption Center of SF, and a practical demonstration of Reclaiming the Commons by calling forth the talents that we all have to share with one another. (so bring yours to share)

We are writing to encourage everyone to join the Reclaim the Commons mobilization at the Really, Really Free Market on Sunday, June 6, in Union Square between 2-4 pm. The market is part of the mobilization to protest the biotech convention arriving in SF for June 6-9 and the G8 meetings being held in Georgia, and to hold the vision
that "another world is possible".

The market will be a demonstration of the "gift economy" in the midst of the Conspicuous Consumption Center of SF, and a practical demonstration of Reclaiming the Commons by calling forth the talents that we all have to share with one another.

The etiquette is no money, barter, trades; and bring some kind of plastic, carpet or other cushioning device for tables, chairs, etc. that will be on the "hardscape" of Union Square. If you need to use tape on the floor surface, please use "gaffer's tape" - similar to duct tape, leaves no glue.

Really really encouraging massage tables, performers, musicians, poetry, psychic readings, tarot readings, all that is positive.

There will be a "performance corner" for performers and musicians at the market, with amplification available if desired.

Please feel free to bring something to give away.

This is not a rally and there will be no announcements! This is a day off from all that and hoping to bring to birth something new.

We're going to fill the stage with native plants to give away.

Please consider coming with an offering so this event can be as wide-ranging as possible.
