SCANDALOUS RAISE BRINGS OUT CAMPUS UNIONS and STUDENTS IN PROTEST
FAREWELL TO EX-CHANCELLOR GREENWOOD

Date: Thursday, June 3rd

Time: 5:30p.m.

Place: Outside Cocoanut Grove Ballroom, near Boardwalk, Santa
Cruz

Sponsor: University Labor United (ULU)

Contacts: Yolanda Lopez, AFSCME #247-8260

Becky Klein, CUE #588-0858

On Thursday June 3, University Labor United, the
coalition of campus unions at UCSC, students from the campus, brothers
and sisters from the local labor movement, and community members will be
demonstrating at former Chancellor Greenwood’s farewell celebration
dinner at Cocoanut Grove. The ex-chancellor recently left UCSC to become
UC Provost and senior vice president of academic affairs, accepting a
raise of over $110,000.

According to Yolanda Lopez, a
custodian with AFSCME Local 3299, “her raise is more than five full-time
custodians’ salaries at this campus. To make matters worse, UCSC is
understaffed and employees were overworked. In my department, we are
being told that next year we might have to clean twice the area we
currently do. As union members, we are concerned that UC's decision will
undermine the quality of service we can provide to
students."

The campus unions, students, and community allies will be there to act as
the long lost conscience of the Chancellor. Instead of celebrating, we
will be commemorating the jobs that will be lost by workers on this
campus and in this community. “How can we possibly celebrate when
Greenwood has chosen personal gain rather than looking out for the
livelihood of campus workers? asked Becky Klein, a UCSC clerical worker
and local president of CUE, demanding, “What kind of a budget crisis
results in lay off clerical workers and other staff while giving top
administrators obscene raises like $110K? That’s not a budget crisis,
that’s an ethical crisis.

This protest follows closely on the heels of the recent ULU Budget Forum
on May 6 when all of the campus unions and the Student Union Assembly
endorsed a seven-point statement on UCSC’s budget priorities. The protest
is part of a larger campaign to inform and educate the community from the
perspective of the workers and students in this time of budget cuts and
layoffs. Please join us on June 3rd from 5:30-6:30pm outside of the
Cocoanut Grove near the boardwalk. Bring signs and
noisemakers.
