On Tuesday, June 8, the Santa Cruz City Council voted 5-1 in support of a resolution calling
for an official probe into the abuse of detainees held in US run prisons in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. Further, the Council action supports House Resolution 629, sponsored by Congressman Charles Rangel of New York, calling for the impeachment of Defense Secratary Donald Rumsfeld.
The action comes amid revelations of a classified report drawn up by top level Pentagon attorneys, whose intent was to justify abuses and torture against detainees.
The measure was brought to the Council by members Rotkin and Fitzmaurice, and came at the urging of local activists.
About three dozen people turned out to support the measure, while a few came specifically to speak against the resolution.
Councilmember Mark Primack was the lone vote against the action.
