Come Support the Poet & Patriot at City Hall

The Poet & Patriot Irish Pub is asking the City Council for permission to have amplified music and change the hours of operation to be the same as other pubs, bars, and music clubs in the city.

The Poet has gone through the Zoning Administrator and the Planning Commission whose decisions have been appealed by neighbors.

REASONS TO SUPPORT THE POET & PATRIOT:

*Support local independent musicians/artists in an open-mic forum.

*Support a community of labor union workers, fishermen/women, service workers, and generally wonderful people.

*No other bar in town has its hours restricted as the Poet's. They are to be closed at midnight on weekdays and 1:30 AM on weekends. Let's be fair.

*The Poet has been open for 21 years and has received Mayor's Proclimations repeatedly for its contributions to the community.

*The adjacent Kuumbwa Jazz Center drowns out the quiet pub.

*The pub keeps watch over and "polices" the alleyway connecting Pacific Ave and Cedar Street while rowdy, disrespectful, and dangerous crowds leave downtown after a night of drinking hard alcohol (which is not served at the Poet).

*The Compassion Flower Inn is a big supporter of the Poet & Patriot.

Re: THE STRUGGLE FOR SONG

On Tuesday June 22, the City Council voted to allow the Poet & Patriot to extend its hours of opperation to 2 AM daily. The Council also approved a permit for amplified music until 11 PM Sunday - Thursday and until 12:30 AM Friday and Saturday.

About twenty people addressed the Council in favor of the Poet and three people against. The neighbors were concerned of the noise pollution, however no proof was given that any noise disturbance had ever been caused by the Poet. Several neighbors testified they had never been disturbed by noises from the pub.

Resident Celtic band "Whiskey in the Jar" performed a short piece before the Council during owner Chris Mathews alloted time.

The Council continues to recognize the Poet & Patriot Pub as a treasure of the city.
