Farenheit 9/11 House Parties Across US

Hundreds of house parties took place in the US to discuss Michael Moore's new documentary film, "Farenheit 9/11", on Monday evening, June 28.

Available by internet stream, producer Michael Moore spoke to his US audience and encouraged them to organize against George W. Bush in the upcoming November presidential elections.
House parties organized by the internet list serve, MoveOn.org, used the internet to hear the director of the documentary film "Farenheit 9/11" and to send in questions from the party goers. Although many questions were sent in, only a few were answered because there were so many house parties. MoveOn.org displayed a map of the US which showed where all the house parties were located. In many areas the dots merged together to form a large mass. It was impressive to see where the activists with internet connections were located.

Most of the discussion was about the initial success of the film at box offices across the nation, the positive responses from it, and how to defeat George Bush in the upcoming Presidential elections. Moore said he believes that people who were unsure about the reasons to invade Iraq as stated by President Bush, were convinced by seeing this film, that he is not acting in the best interest of the United States, and that he should not be re-elected.
Moore said many people have told him, after seeing the film, that they felt lied to and decieved by President Bush. Many people question why the press was so cooperative with Bush's lies, and wonder why they did not question what Bush was saying at the time. Many people who saw the film question why some of the footage that is used in it was never shown by the press since the footage is taken from the press archives.

The remainder of the internet stream was used to discuss MoveOn.org's plan to defeat Bush by organizing a phone party on July 11. At that time people will gather with their cell phones and call unregistered voters to encourage them to register and vote against Bush in the November elections.

At our house party, over 50 neighbors from nearby areas socialized and spoke about the movie and future plans to defeat Bush. Many thanks to our host and hostess for providing their home and internet connection with patio speakers to accomodate the large overflow. Although this home is in an ethnically mixed and socially mixed neighborhood (in Los Angeles), the attendees, who mostly did not know each other, appeared to be primarily white middle class. I find this to be an interesting use of the internet to organize this sector. People seemed very relaxled and comfortable with the cultural aspect of it. I wonder if the internet is a tool that can be used in more culturally diverse ways?

The power of the internet will change the world for the better whether 'they' like it or not!

Defeating Bush isn't the only objective however, we first have to take this energy to boston and take back the democratic party.

Another site, Wintersoldier.com, places records from Sen. Kerry's anti-war protests online, including the transcript of the full question and answer session before a U.S. Senate committee, where the young Vietnam veteran detailed, among other activities, his trip as a civilian to the Paris Peace talks involving the U.S., South Vietnamese and North Vietnamese governments.

"I have been to Paris. I have talked with both delegations at the peace talks -- that is to say the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the Provisional Revolutionary Government," Kerry said during testimony on April 22, 1971, before the Foreign Relations Committee, according to the transcript posted on the site.

Wintersoldier.com also features audio sound bites -- in the MP3 format -- of Kerry describing what he did in Vietnam, both in testimony before the Senate and in an interview.

"Yes, I committed the same kinds of atrocities as thousands of other soldiers have committed," Kerry said in the sound bite. "I took part in search and destroy missions, in the burning of villages."

Indymedia is linked to from MM's website under "Alternative Media"

I wish it had more prominance on the website, like a bunch of other news orgs, but the IMC is linked.

MM's site also links to Radio4all.net and lots of other great sites.

MM also listed FTAAimc.org as the link of the week once.

This Independent Media Center (IMC) is specifically set-up for coverage on the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), mainly with postings that are syndicated from other IMC's, as well as for direct coverage and special events.

This site is run by Indymedia volunteers from different IMCs from different continents.

FTAAIMC.org has some great first hand accounts of last month's protest in Miami as well as background information on the FTAA and related links.
