Study Finds UCSC Service Workers Paid Poverty Wages

UC wages lag behind CSU, Community Colleges and Kaiser

Researched by the National Economic Development and Law Center (NEDLC), the report finds that despite UC’s high profile as a premier public institution of learning and opportunity, 46% of UC service employees earn wages that would not meet basic needs for a family with two parents working full-time and raising two children, if both adults earned the amount paid by UC. 35% earn wages insufficient to support only the employee and 93% percent earn wages that would not meet basic needs for a single adult raising a child.

Rally Against UC Budget Practices

Several hundred people gathered yesterday outside the office of Denice Denton, on Day One of her new job as Chancellor at the University of California Santa Cruz. The Student and Worker Coalition for Justice, an ad-hoc group on campus, organized the rally to highlight, what they say are misguided budget priorities and hiring practices throughout the UC system. FSRN's Vinny Lombardo reports.

Welcoming Chancellor Denton to UC Santa Cruz
On February 14th (Valentine's Day), the Student & Worker Coalition for Justice, AFSCME Service Workers, CUE Clericals, and other campus unions "welcomed" incoming Chancellor Denise Denton on her first day at UCSC.
Several hundred students and workers marched from McHenry Library to Kerr Hall. At Kerr, the Budget Office was noisily occupied, with the large crowd flowing out onto the upper patio. (12 minute video)

UCSC Students and Workers ask: Where Is The Love? pt.2
Valentine's Day Action at UC Santa Cruz protesting: Student Fee Hikes and No Raises for Workers in 2 Years, while UC Executives were paid $2.4 Million and the Chancellor's Partner was Given a $192,000 Job. In attendance were members of the Student & Worker Coalition for Justice, AFSCME Service Workers, CUE Clericals, and other campus unions.
